Heart Rhythm, 2010
Purkinje cells are specialized for rapid propagation in the heart. Furthermore, Purkinje fibers as the source as well as the perpetuator of arrhythmias is a familiar finding. This is not surprising considering their location in the heart and their unique cell ultrastructure, cell electrophysiology, and mode of excitation-contraction coupling.

The Anatomical Record, 1969
AbstractIn the course of ultrastructural studies on the cerebellar cortex of young rats a cilium was found in some Purkinje cells. The shaft, which is 1800 to 2000 ÅR thick, has an internal portion inside the cell body and an external one projecting into the neuropile. The basal body is consistently located near the Golgi apparatus.

Cardiac Purkinje cells in culture
Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, 1983Purkinje cells from false tendons of young rabbits, pigs and fetal lambs were dispersed by the action of collagenase and elastase and grown in culture for up to 14 days. Immunofluorescent staining with fluorescein-labelled antibodies to cardiac myosin and tropomyosin demonstrated cross-banding and/or a diffuse positive stain in Purkinje cells between 3

Anatomy embroiders function in Purkinje cells
The Lancet Neurology, 2021The anatomy of the human cerebellar Purkinje cell, as captured by Ramón y Cajal in a drawing, inspired the spectacular cover embroidery by Lisa Stoneman (Roanoke College, Roanoke, VA, USA) in the October issue of The Lancet Neurology. 1 Like contemporary confocal microscopy images do, this anatomical representation also raises fascinating questions ...

Purkinje Cell Transplants inShakerMutant Rats with Hereditary Purkinje Cell Degeneration and Ataxia
Experimental Neurology, 1998Shaker mutant rats are characterized by the adult-onset degeneration of cerebellar anterior lobe Purkinje cells and temporally correlated development of ataxia and tremor. Normal E-13 Purkinje cells were transplanted into the anterior cerebellum in adult shaker mutant rats to study donor/host interactions in an animal with adult-onset ...

The apparent simplicity of the cerebellar cortex reflects in part the small number of neuronal types comprised in it. Most descriptions credit it with only five types of nerve cells: Purkinje cells, granule cells, basket cells, stellate cells, and Golgi cells.
