Abstractmagnified image4‐Azulen‐1‐yl substituted 2,6‐dimethyl‐and 2,6‐diphenyl‐pyridinium salts are obtained in yields between 50 % and 100 % in the reaction of corresponding 4‐azulen‐1‐yl‐pyranylim salts and various amines. The effects of amine structure and of substitution in the heterocycle or at azulene moieties on the synthesis have been ...

VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA OF PYRIDINIUM SALTS
Canadian Journal of Chemistry, 1961The vibrational spectrum of the pyridinium ion, C5H5NH+, and the N-deuterated species has been studied in several pyridinium salts. By comparison with benzene and deuterobenzene (with which the pyridinium ion is isoelectronic) a fairly complete assignment has been made. The N—H bonds, which are hydrogen bonded to the anions, have stretching vibrations

Syntheses Using Pyridinium Salts (IV)
Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English, 1963AbstractCleavage of N‐phenylpyridinium or N‐vinylpyridinium salts with secondary aliphatic amines leads to aromatic amino compounds or enamines which are often unobtainable by other routes. The other fragment, glutacondialdehyde or its monoanil, gives azulenes, as shown by Ziegler and Hafner, as well as König; these compounds can also be prepared from ...

Pyridines and pyridinium salts from cyanoacetamides
Australian Journal of Chemistry, 1976Self-condensation of cyanoacetamides under the influence of phosphorus oxychloride leads to pyridines and pyridinium salts in high yield. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed and evidence for the structure of the products is described. The chemical activity of the new pyridine derivatives has been briefly explored.

Organized polymerization of vinyl pyridinium salts
Journal of Polymer Science Part C: Polymer Symposia, 1968AbstractThe study of the spontaneous polymerization of quaternary vinyl pyridinium salts in concentrated aqueous solutions showed that the process occurred by the specific ionic mechanism. The results of kinetic measurements made for 1,2‐dimethyl‐5‐vinylpyridinium methyl sulfate are interpreted in terms of chain propagation in aggregates of regular ...

Pyridinium salts, both molecular and polymeric, are an interesting class of multifunctional materials that exhibit liquid-crystalline and light-emitting properties. Moreover, their properties can be easily tuned by introducing new types of anions or by modifying their chemical structures.
