Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.

The Central Role of Glucokinase in Glucose Homeostasis: A Perspective 50 Years After Demonstrating the Presence of the Enzyme in Islets of Langerhans

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2019
It is hypothesized that glucokinase (GCK) is the glucose sensor not only for regulation of insulin release by pancreatic β-cells, but also for the rest of the cells that contribute to glucose homeostasis in mammals. This includes other cells in endocrine

Bovine heart pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase stimulation by monovalent ions

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1989
The effects of monovalent ions on endogenous pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) kinase activity in purified bovine heart pyruvate dehydrogenase complex were investigated. Activity of PDH kinase was stimulated 1.9-, 1.95-, 1.65-, and 1.4-fold by 10 mM K+, Rb+, NH+4, and Cs+, respectively, whereas Na+ and Li+ had no effect on PDH kinase activity.

Identification of histone deacetylase inhibitor targeting type I interferon and B‐cell abnormalities in systemic lupus erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Objective Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by increased type I interferon (IFN‐I) and autoantibody production. This study aimed to identify drugs that can inhibit both IFN‐I and autoantibody production. Methods We identified an inhibitor of IFN‐I production from a chemical library.

PDK1 promotes breast cancer progression by enhancing the stability and transcriptional activity of HIF-1α

open access: yesGenes and Diseases
Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1) phosphorylates the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, which inhibits its activity. Inhibiting pyruvate dehydrogenase complex inhibits the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the reprogramming of tumor cell metabolism to ...

Industrial strategies to minimize glycerol formation in ethanol fermentation by conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Industrial ethanol production faces the challenge of balancing metabolic efficiency with the minimization of byproducts such as glycerol, whose formation is intensified by osmotic, thermal, oxidative, and nutritional stresses. In the literature, two main approaches stand out for modulating its synthesis: the use of genetically modified strains

Effects of seven days’ fasting on physical performance and metabolic adaptation during exercise in humans

open access: yesNature Communications
Humans have, throughout history, faced periods of starvation necessitating increased physical effort to gather food. To explore adaptations in muscle function, 13 participants (7 males and 6 females) fasted for seven days. They lost 4.6 ± 0.3 kg lean and

Cysteine catabolism and the serine biosynthesis pathway support pyruvate production during pyruvate kinase knockdown in pancreatic cancer cells

open access: yesCancer & Metabolism, 2019
Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with limited treatment options. Pyruvate kinase, especially the M2 isoform (PKM2), is highly expressed in PDAC cells, but its role in pancreatic cancer remains controversial.
