T cells critically depend on pyruvate oxidation
Cell Metabolism, 2021Supporting the notion that cell lineage is a key determinant of cancer cell metabolism, Jun et al. (2021) identify a selective requirement for pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity in T cells and T cell leukemia, but not hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) or myeloid leukemia, in this issue of Cell Metabolism.

Acetylphosphate and Pyruvate Oxidation
Nature, 1939LIPMANN has recently reported1 that adenylic acid is partially phosphorylated to adenosino polyphosphate by preparations of Bacterium Delbruckii in the presence of acetylphosphate, and suggested that this compound may be an intermediate in the oxidation of pyruvic acid generally. If so, acetylphosphate should give an increased oxygen uptake with enzyme

Pyruvate oxidation by Methanococcus spp.
Archives of Microbiology, 1992In the absence of H2, Methanococcus spp. utilized pyruvate as an electron donor for methanogenesis. For Methanococcus voltae A3, Methanococcus maripaludis JJ1, and Methanococcus vannielii, typical rates of pyruvate-dependent methanogenesis were 3.4, 2.8, and 3.9 nmol min-1 mg-1 cell dry wt, respectively.

Lysine acetylation regulates mitochondrial pyruvate carrier activity and cardiac pyruvate oxidation
Physiology, 2023Background/Objective: The normal heart can acutely switch fuel sources based on delivery. While this is beneficial in physiological scenarios, this flexibility is often lost in cardiac pathologies. During fasting, blood glucose levels drop and increased free fatty acid delivery causes the heart to shut off glucose/pyruvate oxidation and increase fat ...

Pyruvate Oxidation System in Brain
Nature, 1939WE have recently reported1 that the oxidation of pyruvate by finely ground preparations of pigeon's brain is catalysed by fumarate and adenylic acid (or adenosine triphosphate). The effect of fumarate can be obtained in non-dialysed preparations, that of adenylic acid after short dialysis (two hours), when the activity of the system can be fully ...

Oxidative Damage to Lens in Culture: Reversibility by Pyruvate and Ethyl Pyruvate
Ophthalmologica, 2005It is generally believed that prophylactic intake of antioxidants is beneficial in delaying the onset of some aging manifestations such as cataract. However, whether such a supplementation will also be effective if the pathophysiogical process has already set in remains a largely open question.

Respiratory oxidation of pyruvate by plant mitochondria
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1953Abstract Cytoplasmic particles isolated from mung bean seedlings can oxidize all of the acids of the Krebs cycle. The oxidation of pyruvate is dependent upon the concomitant oxidation of a catalytic amount of one of the di- or tricarboxylic acids, and in this function the various acids are approximately equivalent.

Oxygen inhibition in Azotobacter vinelandii pyruvate oxidation
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1962The oxygen inhibition of respiration in Azotobacter vinelandii has been investigated, and shown to increase with time and to be reversible. The decrease in oxygen uptake with time has been found to correlate with accumulation of keto acids, identified by chromatography as pyruvic and α-ketoglutaric acids.

Oxidative Degradation of Pyruvate Formate-Lyase
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2000The reaction mechanisms of oxidative degradation of the anaerobic radical enzyme pyruvate formate-lyase (PFL) have been examined at the theoretical hybrid Hartree−Fock/density functional theory level B3-LYP. It is concluded that the most likely scenario involves O2 addition at the glycyl radical site, followed by H• abstraction/transfer from C419 and ...
