Dimeric pyruvate formate‐lyase cleaves pyruvate using a radical‐based mechanism. G734 serves as a radical storage location, and the radical is transferred to the catalytic C419 residue. Mutation of the C418‐C419 pair causes loss of enzyme activity, but does not impede radical introduction onto G734. Therefore, cis‐ but not trans‐radical transfer occurs

Resource allocation explains lactic acid production in mixed‐culture anaerobic fermentations [PDF]
Lactate production in anaerobic carbohydrate fermentations with mixed cultures of microorganisms is generally observed only in very specific conditions: the reactor should be run discontinuously and peptides and B vitamins must be present in the culture ...

Manipulation of carbohydrate diet and ensuing changes in weight and glycogen storage in bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) queens [PDF]
Bumble bees serve as important pollinators for human crops, but many of their populations have declined over the past 60 years. Bumble bee population decline is very important for humans because it reduces pollination services, which can lead to lower ...

NAD+ regeneration by mitochondrial complex I NADH dehydrogenase is important for cancer cell proliferation. Specifically, NAD+ is necessary for the activities of NAD+‐dependent deacetylases SIRT3 and SIRT7, which suppress the expression of p21Cip1 cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor, an antiproliferative molecule, at the translational and transcriptional

TOMM20 increases cancer aggressiveness by maintaining a reduced state with increased NADH and NADPH levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and apoptosis resistance while reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Conversely, CRISPR‐Cas9 knockdown of TOMM20 alters these cancer‐aggressive traits.

Low expression of five purine metabolism‐related genes (ADSL, APRT, ADCY3, NME3, NME6) was correlated with poor survival in colorectal cancer. Immunohistochemistry analysis showed that low NME3 (early stage) and low ADSL/NME6 (late stage) levels were associated with high risk.

The role of lactate and HCAR1 in mitochondrial dynamics and neuronal survival after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia [PDF]
Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia (HI) is one of the most common causes for death and disabilities in infants. It is responsible for 23% of infant mortality and it affects 0.7-1.2 million neonates annually.
