Lymphocyte subpopulations in active tuberculosis: association with disease severity and the QFT-GIT assay.

Cell-mediated immune response plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis (TB). We retrospectively evaluated lymphocyte subpopulations in 177 active TB patients compared to 93 healthy controls, finding a relevant decrease in total lymphocytes and CD8+ cells.

Four years has passed since QuantiFERON TB-Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT), the third generation test, has replaced QuantiFERON-Gold in Japan. The QFT-GIT test detects interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which is released from lymphocytes present in blood after exposure to the M. tuberculosis complex antigens ESAT-6, CFP-10 and TB7.7.

QFT-GIT vs TST in diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Poland

Introduction: Poland is characterized by medium prevalence of tuberculosis (21,6/100 000) in 2009. The diagnosis of LTBI is difficult due to obligatory multiple revaccination in the past as well as low specificity of tuberculin skin test. So far IGRA tests were rarely done in Poland.

To evaluate the agreement between QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT) and tuberculin skin test (TST) for the screening of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in recent immigrants to Italy, 279 subjects were submitted to concomitant TST and QFT-GIT. The agreement was analyzed using k statistics.
