A single-field-period quasi-isodynamic stellarator
A single-field-period quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration is presented. This configuration, which resembles a twisted strip, is obtained by the method of direct construction, that is, it is found via an expansion in the distance from the magnetic axis.

Trapped-particle Instabilities in Quasi-isodynamic Stellarators [PDF]
The confinement of energy has always been a challenge in magnetic confinement fusion devices. Due to their toroidal shape there exist regions of high and low magnetic field, so that the particles are divided into two classes - trapped ones that are ...

Direct construction of large aspect ratio quasi-isodynamic stellarators [PDF]
This work presents an exploration into the use of the near-axis expansion (NAE) method, a first-order expansion of the magnetohydrodynamic equations, to construct quasi-isodynamic (QI) stellarators with low neoclassical confinement, at finite aspect ...

Helicity of the magnetic axes of quasi-isodynamic stellarators
In this study, we explore the influence of the helicity of the magnetic axis – defined as the self-linking number of the curve – on the quality of quasi-isodynamic stellarator-symmetric configurations constructed using the near-axis expansion method (Plunk et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85, 2019, 905850602; Camacho Mata et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88,

Introducing isodynamic points for binary forms and their ratios
The isodynamic points of a plane triangle are known to be the only pair of its centers invariant under the action of the Möbius group M on the set of triangles, Kimberling (Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers, http://faculty.evansville.edu/ck6/encyclopedia).

The maximum-J property in quasi-isodynamic stellarators
Some stellarators tend to benefit from favourable average magnetic curvature for trapped particles when the plasma pressure is sufficiently high. This so-called maximum- $J$ property has several positive implications, such as good fast-particle confinement, magnetohydrodynamic stability and suppression of certain trapped ...

Critical gradient optimisation for quasi-isodynamic stellarators
We present new and updated methods for reducing transport caused by electrostatic ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven turbulence in quasi-isodynamic (QI) configurations. We first show an updated model for the threshold (critical) gradient of localised toroidal ITG modes.

Geometry effects on zonal flow dynamics and turbulent transport in optimized stellarators
Global gyrokinetic simulations find a strong suppression of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence by zonal flows in stellarators optimized for neoclassical transport.

Near-axis quasi-isodynamic database
In this work we investigate the landscape of quasi-isodynamic (QI) stellarators using the near-axis expansion of the magnetic field. Building on recent theoretical developments, we construct a database of more than 800 000 stable, approximately QI vacuum magnetic configurations.
