Viral Metagenomic Profiling of Croatian Bat Population Reveals Sample and Habitat Dependent Diversity

open access: yesViruses, 2020
To date, the microbiome, as well as the virome of the Croatian populations of bats, was unknown. Here, we present the results of the first viral metagenomic analysis of guano, feces and saliva (oral swabs) of seven bat species (Myotis myotis, Miniopterus

Ampliseq for Illumina Technology Enables Detailed Molecular Epidemiology of Rabies Lyssaviruses from Infected Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissues

open access: yesViruses, 2022
Whole genome sequencing of rabies lyssaviruses (RABVs) has enabled the generation of highly detailed phylogenies that reveal viral transmission patterns of disease in reservoir species.

Spatial expansions and travelling waves of rabies in vampire bats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A major obstacle to anticipating the cross-species transmission of zoonotic diseases and developing novel strategies for their control is the scarcity of data informing how these pathogens circulate within natural reservoir populations.

Major Causes of Rabies Outbreak in Pastoral Areas of the Somali Region and Importance of the One Health Approach

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Rabies Transmission and Control in the Somali Region. Introduction: Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease caused by the Lyssavirus, posing a significant threat to both wildlife and public health in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. Key Points: 1. Primary Hosts: Wild carnivores such as foxes, jackals, raccoons, skunks, bats, and honey badgers are the main ...

Revealing the complexity of vampire bat rabies “spillover transmission”

open access: yesInfectious Diseases of Poverty, 2023
Background The term virus ‘spillover’ embodies a highly complex phenomenon and is often used to refer to viral transmission from a primary reservoir host to a new, naïve yet susceptible and permissive host species.

Use of Restricted Nursing and a Bovine Appeasing Substance on the Welfare, Growth Performance, and Response to Vaccination of Beef Calves at Weaning

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The effects of restricted nursing (RN) and the administration of a bovine appeasing substance (BAS) on days −8 and 0 in relation to weaning were evaluated. Both strategies were effective in improving the growth performance of beef calves. Regarding welfare, BAS ‐especially on day 0‐ was more effective than RN.

A cocktail of human monoclonal antibodies broadly neutralizes North American rabies virus variants as a promising candidate for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Human rabies remains a globally significant public health problem. Replacement of polyclonal anti-rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), a passive component of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), with a monoclonal antibody (MAb), would eliminate the cost and ...

Not all surveillance data are created equal—A multi‐method dynamic occupancy approach to determine rabies elimination from wildlife [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
1. A necessary component of elimination programmes for wildlife disease is effective surveillance. The ability to distinguish between disease freedom and non‐detection can mean the difference between a successful elimination campaign and new epizootics ...
