Fixed-target serial oscillation crystallography at room temperature

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2019
A fixed-target approach to high-throughput room-temperature serial synchrotron crystallography with oscillation is described. Patterned silicon chips with microwells provide high crystal-loading density with an extremely high hit rate.

Radiation damage [PDF]

open access: yes
The radiation damage workshop considered a variety of topics among which were the need for equivalent electron fluences in gallium arsenide, the possibility of 15 percent end-of-life efficiencies for silicon, increasing radiation resistance in gallium ...

Insights into a long life without cancer: The case of the bowhead whale

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Long‐lived, large‐bodied organisms have evolved powerful anticancer mechanisms that preserve cellular and tissue integrity across extended lifespans. A recent study by Firsanov et al. shows that greater genome stability is a key factor underlying the remarkable longevity and cancer resistance of one such species, the bowhead whale.

Post-translational modification networks in tumor radiosensitivity: mechanistic insights and therapeutic opportunities

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine
Background Radiotherapy is a central modality in cancer management, yet intrinsic and acquired radioresistance and dose-limiting normal tissue toxicities continue to constrain durable tumor control.

Advancements in primary radiation damage models and SRIM simulations: A review of radiation damage predictions

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology
Evaluating radiation damage in materials and devices is vital for their use in extreme environments, but accurate predictions are challenging due to uncertainties in traditional models like Primary Radiation Damage Models (PRDMs) and modern simulations ...

Radiation damage in small-molecule crystallography: fact not fiction

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2019
Traditionally small-molecule crystallographers have not usually observed or recognized significant radiation damage to their samples during diffraction experiments.

Circulating tumor cell viability during and after radiotherapy mirrors treatment response in cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Radiotherapy (RT) response depends on the DNA repair capacity of tumor and host cells. We show that circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts and apoptosis rates before and after RT predict treatment response and outcome, which can be accessed via easily accessible liquid biopsy approaches. Created in BioRender. Wikman, H.

Native SAD is maturing

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2015
Native SAD phasing uses the anomalous scattering signal of light atoms in the crystalline, native samples of macromolecules collected from single-wavelength X-ray diffraction experiments.

Loss of IGF‐1R impairs DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin leading to defective end‐joining

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
IGF‐1R promotes radioresistance by facilitating DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin, enabling non‐homologous end‐joining (NHEJ) repair of double‐strand breaks. Inhibition or loss of IGF‐1R disrupts this recruitment to damage sites, driving compensatory reliance on microhomology‐mediated end‐joining (MMEJ) repair.
