Vascular smooth muscle cell mechanotransduction: Pathways, phenotypes and emerging technologies

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Vascular smooth muscle cells are exposed to mechanical stimuli from the blood flow and the extracellular matrix. The cells sense the signals from cyclic stretch, shear stress, hydrostatic pressure and matrix stiffness through specialized mechanosensors, such as mechanosensitive ion channels or cell surface receptors including ...

Assessing the evolutionary distinctiveness of a highly threatened plant group: The urgency to preserve a unique lineage of evolution in Brazil

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 1223-1237, July 2026.
Brazil's diverse flora is under several threats, with many unique lineages facing extinction, particularly in biodiverse regions like the Cerrado and campo rupestre. This study sheds light on the conservation needs of Cambessedesia (Melastomataceae), an endemic genus with 95% of its species endangered, using an approach to rank and prioritise species ...

Balancing tracks and trees: Assessing railroad impact on Brazilian biodiversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 1345-1356, July 2026.
The Brazilian West–East Integration Railway (FIOL) aims to boost the national economy by improving commodity transport; however, it crosses three of Brazil's most biodiverse and fragile regions: the Caatinga, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Using digitised plant records and land‐use analyses, our study reveals significant vegetation loss within the ...

Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1582-1605, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Patient Dose Optimisation of Abdominopelvic Protocols During X‐Ray Imaging

open access: yesJournal of Medical Radiation Sciences, Volume 73, Issue 2, Page 156-163, June 2026.
This study evaluates organ doses in abdominopelvic radiography for both erect and supine positions, addressing dose optimisation concerns in Ghana. Using CalDose X and thermoluminescence dosimeters, organ doses and image quality were analysed, revealing significant dose reductions with optimised exposure parameters (70 kVp, 10 mAs, 110 cm FDD).

City Nuisance Ordinances and Overdose Mortality

open access: yesJournal of Policy Analysis and Management, Volume 45, Issue 3, Summer 2026.
ABSTRACT Nuisance ordinances are a class of municipal law that are framed as a way to reduce both police burden and unwanted behaviors such as repeated calls to 911, drug‐related activity, and disorderly conduct. This study explores the effect of nuisance ordinances on drug‐related mortality rates in Ohio and surrounding commuting zones from 1999 to ...
