An exploration of the factors influencing successful implementation, delivery and outcomes in an intensive care sedation study: process evaluation of the A2B RCT

open access: yesHealth Technology Assessment
Background Choice of sedation of critically ill patients is a core element of intensive care practice. The alpha 2 agonists for sedation to produce better outcomes from critical illness (A2B) trial tested the effectiveness of two alpha agonist sedatives ...

Effects of stimulating single acupoint and combination acupoints on diabetic gastroparesis: A randomised controlled trial study

open access: yesJournal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine
Background and aim: The most effective among the acupoints remains to be determined for treating diabetic gastroparesis (DGP). This study aimed to compare single and combination acupoints for their effectiveness in DGP.

An optimised patient information sheet did not significantly increase recruitment or retention in a falls prevention study: an embedded randomised recruitment trial

open access: yesTrials, 2017
Background Randomised controlled trials are generally regarded as the ‘gold standard’ experimental design to determine the effectiveness of an intervention.

Investigating strategies to improve AccesS to Kidney transplantation (the ASK trial): a protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial with parallel process evaluation

open access: yesPilot and Feasibility Studies, 2023
Background The UK’s living-donor kidney transplant (LDKT) activity falls behind that of many other countries internationally, with less than 20% of those eligible receiving a LDKT each year.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Gefitinib and methotrexate to resolve tubal ectopic pregnancy: the GEM3 RCT

open access: yesEfficacy and Mechanism Evaluation, 2023
Background Tubal ectopic pregnancies can cause significant morbidity or even death. Current treatment is with methotrexate or surgery. However, methotrexate treatment can fail in approximately 30% of women.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
