A Dynamic Stochastic Model for DNA Replication Initiation in Early Embryos
Background: Eukaryotic cells seem unable to monitor replication completion during normal S phase, yet must ensure a reliable replication completion time.

Rapid generation of chromosome-specific alphoid DNA probes using the polymerase chain reaction [PDF]
Non-isotopic in situ hybridization of chromosome-specific alphoid DNA probes has become a potent tool in the study of numerical aberrations of specific human chromosomes at all stages of the cell cycle. In this paper, we describe approaches for the rapid

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Development of Lasing Silica Microsphere for High-Speed DNA Molecular Detection
Laser and molecular detection techniques that have been used to overcome the limitations of fluorescent DNA labeling have presented new challenges. To address some of these challenges, we developed a DNA laser that uses a solid-state silica microsphere ...

Expression in mammalian cells of a cloned gene encoding murine DNA methyltransferase [PDF]
Mammalian DNA cytosine-5-methyltransferase (MTase, EC 2.1.1.37) is an essential component for establishing and maintaining cell-type specific methylation patterns in the genome. The cDNAfor the murine enzyme was previously cloned in segments.

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

A Simple Method for Sexing Chicken Embryos at Stage X
A simple method for sexing chicken embryos was devised using DNA prepared from blastodermal cells. A cluster of cells was collected from the area opaca of a stage X blastoderm, and DNA was prepared by the boiling method (10-minute boiling and 3-minute ...

Evolution of repetitive DNA in angiosperms: examples from Nicotiana allopolyploids
PhDAllopolyploidy, interspecific hybridisation coupled with genome multiplication, is a prevailing force in the evolution of angiosperms. This thesis examines the consequences of allopolyploidy at the genomic level.

Low-cost rapid detection of rifampicin resistant tuberculosis using bacteriophage in Kampala, Uganda. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs is a serious public health problem. Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), defined as resistance to at least rifampicin and isoniazid, has been reported in all regions of the world.
