An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Odds of Developing Overweight or Obesity Increase with Height Decile in Tall Healthy Weight Kindergarteners: Longitudinal Results from the West Virginia Coronary Artery Risk Detection In Appalachian Communities (WV CARDIAC) Project

open access: yesJournal of Pediatrics: Clinical Practice
Objective: Childhood obesity is a strong predictor of adult obesity and chronic health complications. Prevention initiatives are most successful when implemented before excess weight gain, but tools to screen healthy weight children for obesity risk are ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Socioeconomic heritage and rapid firm growth [PDF]

open access: yes
The present paper sheds light on how growth of young firms is affected by expansive strategies and the socioeconomic heritage of their main actors. "Socioeconomic heritage" has to do with socialization, prior socioeconomic circumstances, and regional ...

Being big or growing fast: systematic review of size and growth in infancy and later obesity

open access: yes, 2005
Objectives: To assess the association between infant size or growth and subsequent obesity and to determine if any association has been stable over time.Design: Systematic review.Data sources: Medline, Embase, bibliographies of included studies, contact ...

A Case of Pulmonary Hamartoma Showing Rapid Growth

open access: yesCase Reports in Medicine, 2013
A 65-year-old man was admitted for detailed examination of a growing nodular shadow in the left lung. The nodular shadow was initially detected in a routine chest X-ray check-up in March 2012 that warranted regular chest X-ray follow-up.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Bubble growth in a two-dimensional viscoelastic foam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The effects of viscoelasticity on the expansion of gas bubbles arranged in a hexagonal array in a polymeric fluid are investigated. The expansion is driven by the diffusion of a soluble gas from the liquid phase, and the rate of expansion is controlled ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Can we return to rapid growth? [PDF]

open access: yes
The projections for economic growth in the industrial countries during 1985-95 have been revised steadily downward - to a pessimistic 2.5 percent a year.
