Wavenumber variations of spatially damped Rayleigh–Bénard convection
The Physics of Fluids, 1981Under subcritical conditions, it is shown that a spatial variation of the velocity amplitude of convective rolls is accompanied by a modification in their wavenumber which takes values lower than the critical one.

Effects of Rayleigh Damping on the Subgrade’s Apparent Nonlinearity
Journal of Transportation Engineering, Part B: Pavements, 2020AbstractThe effect of the subgrade’s apparent (superficial) nonlinearity captured during falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing has been a major challenge for pavement engineers in trying to ba...

Viscosity Tensor Approach to the Damping of Rayleigh Waves
Journal of Applied Physics, 1969An expression for the attenuation of a generalized Rayleigh wave has been obtained in terms of a viscosity tensor. The values of the viscosity components for Quartz obtained from measurements on bulk waves have been used to calculate the attenuation of several surface waves on that material.

On the modal damping ratios of shear-type structures equipped with Rayleigh damping systems
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2006Abstract The effects of added manufactured viscous dampers upon shear-type structures are analytically investigated here for the class of Rayleigh damping systems. The definitions of mass proportional damping (MPD) and stiffness proportional damping (SPD) systems are briefly recalled and their physical counterpart is derived.

Multi-frequency inversion in Rayleigh damped Magnetic Resonance Elastography
Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, 2014Abstract Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is able to identify mechanical properties of biological tissues in vivo based on underlying assumptions of the model used for inversion. Models, such as the linearly elastic or viscoelastic (VE), can be used with a single input frequency data and can produce a reasonable estimate of identified ...

On the use of Rayleigh damping for seismic analysis
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Engineering and Computational Mechanics, 2009Rayleigh damping is widely used for dynamic analysis of structures. Although it is based on a simple formula, the use of Rayleigh damping for seismic analysis involves a hidden complication, which is commonly overlooked both in theory and in practice. The complication arises because mass-proportional damping introduces an extra term into the equations ...

Damping of Rayleigh waves excited by a moving source
Journal of Soviet Mathematics, 1979The displacement field in a layered medium excited by a moving source is investigated. The resonance occurring when the speeds of the source and of the Rayleigh wave coincide is investigated and the character of the damping in this case is clarified.

Characterization and Synthesis of Rayleigh Damped Elastodynamic Networks
2016We consider damped elastodynamic networks where the damping matrix is assumed to be a non-negative linear combination of the stiffness and mass matrices (Rayleigh damping). We give here a characterization of the frequency response of such networks.
