Reactive Oxygen Species and Reactive Nitrogen Species in Epigenetic Modifications
For the normal homeostasis of a cell, there must be a balance between radical oxygen species/radical nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) production and the neutralization of these species by antioxidant scavenging. In times of stress, this balance is not maintained, and the result is oxidative stress.

Chemiluminescence Measurement of Reactive Sulfur and Nitrogen Species
Antioxidants and Redox Signaling, 2022Significance: Reactive sulfur and nitrogen species such as hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and nitric oxide (NO • ) are ubiquitous cellular signaling molecules that play central roles in physiology and ...

Reactive nitrogen species in the chemical biology of inflammation
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2004The preponderance of epidemiological evidence now points to a strong association between chronic inflammation and cancers of several organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and lungs. The strongest evidence for a mechanistic link here involves the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by macrophages and neutrophils that ...

Aging and the Role of Reactive Nitrogen Species
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2002AbstractThe role of reactive oxygen species and its effects on aging has received considerable attention in the past 47 years since Dr. Denham Harman first proposed the “free radical theory of aging.” Though not completely understood due to the incalculable number of pathways involved, the number of manuscripts that facilitate the understanding of the ...

Reactive nitrogen species in the respiratory tract
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2006Endogenous Nitric Oxide (NO) plays a key role in the physiological regulation of airway functions. In response to various stimuli activated inflammatory cells (e.g., eosinophils and neutrophils) generate oxidants ("oxidative stress") which in conjunction with exaggerated enzymatic release of NO and augmented NO metabolites produce the formation of ...

Reactive Nitrogen Species in Colon Carcinogenesis
Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, 1999The role of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in colon carcinogenesis is multifactorial and affects diverse processes, such as proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, tumorigenesis, and metastases. This review describes the stages in colon carcinogenesis where nitric oxide (NO) and inducible NO synthase (NOS2) may influence the progression of a normal

Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species
Nursing Research, 2015Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, known as free radicals, play a key role in the etiology and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by creating vascular oxidative stress. This review will discuss current biological research about the enzymatic and nonenzymatic sources of oxidative stress, free radical chemistry, and how it pertains ...
