Pulmonary alveolar type 2 cells act as a reservoir of stem cells which can be induced to proliferate during periods of lung growth and repair after lung injury. Despite the importance of this process, the mechanisms that regulate type 2 cell proliferation have not been well characterized.

IGF-2 stimulated growth mediated by the somatomedin type 2 receptor
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1987Human Insulinlike Growth Factor 2 (IGF-2) can promote cell proliferation via the type 2 receptor in K562 cells, a human erythroleukemia cell line with IGF-2/type 2 receptors and insulin receptors but lacking IGF-1/type 1 receptors. Cells are grown in semi-solid agar in the absence and presence of increasing amounts of insulin, IGF-1 and IGF-2.

ABSTRACT The insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II), their receptors and binding proteins (IGFBPs) are endogenously expressed in a number of tissues including the lung during fetal and neonatal development. This endogenous autocrine/paracrine IGF 'system', together with endocrine sources, contributes to the regulation of lung cell proliferation.

GH regulation of the Type 2 IGF receptor in regenerating skeletal muscle of rats
Journal of Endocrinology, 1996Abstract GH enhances skeletal muscle growth, and IGF-II peptide is highly expressed during regeneration. We have therefore investigated the effect of GH administration on IGF-II binding and expression in regenerating rat skeletal muscle using the techniques of receptor autoradiography and in situ hybridisation. Notexin, a myotoxin, was injected

We have studied insulin‐like‐growth‐factor (IGF) binding in two subclones of the C2 myogenic cell line. In the permissive parental subclone, myoblasts differentiate spontaneously into myotubes in medium supplemented with fetal calf serum. Unlike permissive myoblasts, inducible myoblasts require high concentrations of insulin (1.6 μM) or lower ...

Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and insulin influence post-natal gastrointestinal development and function. We have measured by real-time PCR the mRNA levels of IGF-1 and -2, IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs)-2 and -3, and receptors for GH, IGF type-1 and -2, and insulin in esophagus, rumen, fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum

The insulin-like growth factor type 1 receptor (IGF 1R) mediates the acute metabolic effects of IGF I as well as IGF I-stimulated cell proliferation and protection from apoptosis. IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) can modulate these responses. We, therefore, investigated whether intrinsic IGFBPs interfere with IGF I-induced regulation of IGF 1R expression ...
