Evolution of the Mineralocorticoid Receptor
2019The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and its kin, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) evolved from an ancestral corticoid receptor (CR) in a cyclostome (jawless fish) through gene duplication and divergence. Distinct MR and GR orthologs first appear in cartilaginous fishes, such as sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras.

Mineralocorticoid Receptors: Distribution and Activation
Heart Failure Reviews, 2005Mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) bind both mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids with high affinity (deoxycorticosterone = corticosterone >/= aldosterone = cortisol), and are found in both Na(+) transporting epithelia (e.g. kidney, colon) and nonepithelial tissues (e.g. heart, brain).
