The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Silver inhibition on recombinant flavin reductase from Citrobacter freundii A1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this study, the flavin reductase (Fre) of Citrobatter freundii A1 was expressed in E. coli DH5a host with 1 mM IPTG induction. This recombinant protein was fused to 6xHis-tag, thus promising easier IMAC purification of the expressed enzyme.

Effects of IGFBP4 deficiency on human preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation through the IGF1R/AKT pathway

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
IGFBP4 knockdown (KD) impairs preadipocyte proliferation and is associated with IGF1R protein downregulation and attenuated AKT phosphorylation. The mechanisms by which IGFBP4 KD influences the IGF1R/AKT signaling pathway involve newly synthesized proteins and lysosomal degradation pathways. Created in BioRender.

Characterization of two, desiccation linked, Group 1 LEA proteins from the resurrection plant Xerophyta humilis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Studies on resurrection plants and other anhydrobiotic organisms show expression of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins associated with desiccation tolerance. However, the precise role of these proteins has not been described.

Microbial Manufacturing of Recombinant Protein: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Strategies

open access: yesFermentation
Proteins are fundamental to life and indispensable for human physiological activities. However, traditional proteins derived from natural sources such as animals and plants face challenges including low extraction efficiency and limited availability ...

Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

Adenosine triphosphate as a modulator of protein interactions and stability

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ATP is best known as the cell's energy currency, but it also shapes how proteins fold, interact, aggregate and form biomolecular condensates. This review explains the emerging physical principles behind these effects, including weak binding to charged protein regions, magnesium‐dependent behaviour and concentration‐dependent control of protein ...

The effects of anti-sense interleukin-5 gene transferred by recombinant adeno-associated virus in allergic rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The accumulation and infiltration of eosinophils in airways is one of the most important characteristics of asthma, and is mediated partly by secretion of IL-5 from Th2 lymphocytes.
