A red alga‐specific phycoerythrin gene for biodiversity surveys of callithamnioid red algae [PDF]
AbstractWe introduce a photosynthetic pigment‐encoding phycoerythrin gene, consisting of alpha (cpeA) and beta (cpeB) units that can be used for biodiversity surveys of callithamnioid red algae. A set of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed to amplify an approximately 1‐kb fragment of the gene from 14 taxa.

This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

A combination of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations clarifies the pH‐dependent origin of the selectivity of nitrate reduction on Cu(100). ABSTRACT We investigate the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 RR) on the Cu(100) surface using grand‐canonical density functional theory (GC‐DFT) under constant ...

On reproduction in red algae: further research needed at the molecular level
Multicellular red algae (Rhodophyta) have some of the most complex life cycles known in living organisms. Economically valuable seaweeds, such as phycocolloid producers, have a triphasic (gametophyte, carposporophyte and tetrasporophyte) life cycle, not ...

Parallel wiring of bioelectrochemical devices with conventional generators unexpectedly boosts output. A biophotovoltaic paired with a solar cell delivers up to 50% more power at low loads than their separate contributions; a plant microbial fuel cell shows similar current gains.

Benthic assemblages of rock pools in northern Portugal: seasonal and between-pool variability
We investigated the seasonal (winter vs summer and within season) and spatial (between-pool) variability of benthic assemblages of rock pools at mid-intertidal level along the shore of Viana do Castelo (North Portugal).

Autophagic flux is required for the synthesis of triacylglycerols and ribosomal protein turnover in Chlamydomonas [PDF]
Autophagy is an intracellular catabolic process that allows cells to recycle unneeded or damaged material to maintain cellular homeostasis. This highly dynamic process is characterized by the formation of double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes ...

We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...

A laser-scanning confocal microscopy study of carrageenan in red algae from seaweed farms near the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal [PDF]
Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty ex P.C. Silva, a red macroalga, is a commercial source of carrageenan, a widely used polysaccharide compound important in the food and pharmaceutical industries, in nanotechnology, and in pharmacological applications ...
