The decay of Redox-stress Response Capacity is a substantive characteristic of aging: Revising the redox theory of aging

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2017
Aging is tightly associated with redox events. The free radical theory of aging indicates that redox imbalance may be an important factor in the aging process.

Monitoring the Redox Status in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2020
Worldwide, over 2.2 million people suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS), a multifactorial demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. MS is characterized by a wide range of motor, autonomic, and psychobehavioral symptoms, including depression ...

Assessing the Performance of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic Integration in Flavodoxin Redox Potential Estimation

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
Flavodoxins are enzymes that contain the redox-active flavin mononucleotide (FMN) cofactor and play a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including energy conversion and electron transfer.

Dose‐dependent hepatotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide in HepG2 cells and its modulation by CYP450 induction

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
NMR metabolomics revealed concentration‐dependent metabolic perturbations in HepG2 cells exposed to H2O2. Rifampicin pretreatment enhanced metabolic competence, attenuated toxin‐induced alterations and produced metabolite profiles more consistent with human liver physiology, supporting the use of CYP450‐induced HepG2 models for improved in vitro ...

The level of mendione redox-cycling in pancreatic β-cells is proportional to the glucose concentration: role of NADH and consequences for insulin secretion

open access: yes, 2012
Pancreatic β-cells release insulin in response to elevation of glucose from basal (4–7 mM) to stimulatory (8–16 mM) levels. Metabolism of glucose by the β-cell results in the production of low levels of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI), such as ...

The radical induced cell death protein 1 (RCD1) supports transcriptional activation of genes for chloroplast antioxidant enzymes

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2014
The rimb1 (redox imbalanced 1) mutation was mapped to the RCD1 locus (radical-induced cell death 1; At1g32230) demonstrating that a major factor involved in redox-regulation genes for chloroplast antioxidant enzymes and protection against photooxidative ...

NTRC and TRX-f Coordinately Affect the Levels of Enzymes of Chlorophyll Biosynthesis in a Light-Dependent Manner

open access: yesCells, 2023
Redox regulation of plastid gene expression and different metabolic pathways promotes many activities of redox-sensitive proteins. We address the question of how the plastid redox state and the contributing reducing enzymes control the enzymes of ...

Accurate and noninvasive prostate cancer detection using plasma‐derived extracellular vesicle RNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plasma extracellular vesicles were captured with WGA‐conjugated magnetic beads and profiled for RNA biomarkers. A three‐RNA panel (NM_024955, NR_047469, and NR_002564) distinguished prostate cancer from healthy controls and benign prostatic hyperplasia, supporting a simple, noninvasive approach to improve prostate cancer detection.

Recent insights into the molecular mechanism of ubiquinol oxidation by cytochrome bc1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The review reflects on the mechanism of the catalytic reaction in cytochrome bc1: the electron bifurcation that involves the separation of two electrons derived from the quinol oxidation to opposite sides of the enzyme across the membrane. This review summarizes the long‐standing effort to understand the mechanism of quinol oxidation catalyzed by ...
