Monosynaptic Reflexes (H‐Reflex) and Motoneurone Excitability in Man

SUMMARYThe author reviews the rationale of neurophysiological techniques currently employed in the investigation of motor function in man. The physiological basis of monosynaptic reflexes elicited by mechanical or electrical means is critically considered; and recent evidence concerning the complexity of these evoked responses is presented.

Covariation of monosynaptic reflexes in spinal and decerebrate cats

Abstract Monosynaptic reflexes were recorded in several muscle nerves simultaneously. The mean amplitude, relative variance, and cross correlation of the reflexes was computed. A method is presented to calculate the variance and correlation of moving averages, and of the deviation of measurements from moving averages.

Reproducibility of a heteronymous monosynaptic reflex in biceps brachii

The present study provides normal data for a new technique to assess conduction across the C5/C6 segments by recording a heteronymous monosynaptic reflex response from the contracting biceps brachii in response to stimulation of the median nerve in the cubital fossa.

Age-related Changes in Monosynaptic Reflex Excitability

The excitability of the H-reflex was tested in a younger group (19 to 31 years) and an older group (60 to 72 years) of subjects. The threshold for the H-reflex was higher and the reflex latency was 7 msec longer in the older group of subjects. Modulation of cat monosynaptic reflexes by substance P

Brain Research, 1980
Substance P (SP) applied by iontophoresis at different current strengths to single motoneurons of cat spinal cord did not cause these units to discharge. SP produced a gradual and prolonged change in synaptic excitability as measured by response to dorsal root stimulation. The effect outlasted application of SP.

Central effects of succinylcholine and decamethonium on monosynaptic reflexes

Observations have been made in cats upon central mechanisms responsible for reduction in monosynaptic responses of triceps surae motoneurons following intravenous injection of decamethonium or succinylcholine. Two-thirds of extensor motoneurons show an increase in random firing under the influence of these drugs.

Morphine and meperidine on bulbospinal inhibition of the monosynaptic reflex

Abstract The effects of morphine and meperidine were studied on the ventromedial bulbospinal inhibition of the monosynaptic reflex (MRS) in decerebrate unanesthetized cats. Administration of these agents in accumulative doses (0.5–16 mg/kg, i.v.) progressively blocked this inhibition.
