Optical fiber laser sensor for refractive index measurement
2013 9th International Conference on Information, Communications & Signal Processing, 2013A refractive index (RI) sensor was proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head was manufactured by splicing a section of multimode fiber between two single-mode fiber segments (SMS). The SMS structure was used as a filter and inserted into an Erbium fiber ring to generate laser, which can improved the detection accuracy of the sensor.

Ultrasensitive photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor
Optics Letters, 2009We introduce a microfluidic refractive index sensor based on a directional coupler architecture using solid-core photonic crystal fibers. The sensor achieves very high sensitivity by coupling the core mode to a mode in the adjacent fluid-filled waveguide that is beyond modal cutoff, and with strong field overlap.

Sensor for refractive index variation of an optical surface using a high-refractive-index waveguide
Optical Engineering, 2007We describe the design of a waveguide Fabry-Perot optical sensor with high sensitivity to surface refractive index change. The optical thickness and field can be accommodated in a high-refractive-index waveguide, leading to a high sensitivity. Incorporating the resonance structure further enhances the sensitivity.
