Optical fiber laser sensor for refractive index measurement

A refractive index (RI) sensor was proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head was manufactured by splicing a section of multimode fiber between two single-mode fiber segments (SMS). The SMS structure was used as a filter and inserted into an Erbium fiber ring to generate laser, which can improved the detection accuracy of the sensor.

Ultrasensitive photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor

We introduce a microfluidic refractive index sensor based on a directional coupler architecture using solid-core photonic crystal fibers. The sensor achieves very high sensitivity by coupling the core mode to a mode in the adjacent fluid-filled waveguide that is beyond modal cutoff, and with strong field overlap.

Sensor for refractive index variation of an optical surface using a high-refractive-index waveguide

We describe the design of a waveguide Fabry-Perot optical sensor with high sensitivity to surface refractive index change. The optical thickness and field can be accommodated in a high-refractive-index waveguide, leading to a high sensitivity. Incorporating the resonance structure further enhances the sensitivity.
