Inducing regioselectivity in metal-bound aryne reactions and using ligands to govern divergent reaction pathways

open access: yes
University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. January 2025. Major: Chemistry. Advisor: Courtney Roberts. 1 computer file (PDF); xxiii, 225 pages. The highly reactive nature of arynes has been leveraged to make many value-added species. Despite this success,

Pd‐Catalyzed Cyclotrimerization and Cycloaddition of 5,6‐Didehydrobenzo[8]annulenes (BenzoCOTynes): Formation of Nonplanar Tri[8]annulenes and Diels–Alder Cycloadducts

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
A Pd(0)‐catalyzed cyclotrimerization of benzoCOTynes to form tri(benzo[8]annulenes) was developed. Three distinct isomers were isolated and structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Ligand modulation proved crucial for enhancing regioselectivity: P(4‐OMePh), and (S)‐tBu‐Phox promoted the formation of the symmetric isomers.

Remarkable Formation of Indene Derivatives Upon Friedel–Crafts Acylation Reactions

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
This shows indene derivatives. Under the reaction conditions of a Friedel–Crafts acylation, alkyl benzenes underwent an unprecedented cyclopentannulation furnishing indene derivatives. Alkylbenzene derivatives react with two equivalents of pivaloyl chloride (PivCl) in the presence of aluminum trichloride under formation of indene derivatives with up to

Lithium Diisopropylamide‐Mediated Ring‐Opening of Tetrahydrofuran in the Synthesis of Polyhydroxylated Indolizidines

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
Chiral tri‐ and pentahydroxy spirocyclopentane‐indolizidines were synthesized using lithium diisopropylamide “LDA” promoted diallylation and tetrahydrofuran “THF” ring‐opening in a one‐pot procedure as a key step. The sequence leading to the targeted hydroxy‐spiroindolizidines was achieved by cis‐dihydroxylation followed by reduction of the enamine and

Ring-Opening Arylation of Cyclic Diaryliodoniums via Cyclic Triaryliodanes as Aryne Precursors and Dynamic Aryl Reservoirs. [PDF]

open access: yesAngew Chem Int Ed Engl
Cyclic diaryliodonium salts engage aryl Grignard reagents to trigger a self‐propagating aryne–arylation cycle. Transient cyclic triaryliodanes serve as aryne precursors and dynamic aryl reservoirs, delivering iodine‐capped teraryls with predominant meta‐selectivity. The preserved C─I bond enables outward π‐extension or inward recyclization.

Iminodirhodium‐ and Iminocopper‐Catalyzed CH Activation: Chemoselective Oxidation of Alcohols and Aldehydes via Intermolecular Hydride Abstraction

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
Chemoselective hydride abstractor iminometalloids, derived from O‐mesylacetoxime (MAO) using Rh2(II/II) or Cu(I) catalysts, can activate the C–Hα bonds of alcohols and aldehydes ultimately forming ketones, carboxylic acids, and esters even in the presence of C–H bonds with comparable bond strengths.
