The Caenorhabditis elegans DPF‐3 and human DPP4 have tripeptidyl peptidase activity
The dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) family comprises serine proteases classically defined by their ability to remove dipeptides from the N‐termini of substrates, a feature that gave the family its name. Here, we report the discovery of a previously unrecognized tripeptidyl peptidase activity in DPPIV family members from two different species.

Structural heterogeneity and functional convergence of transposable elements
Almost half the mammalian genomes consist of transposable elements (TEs) and their derivatives. The distribution density of TEs can be associated with genomic regions of chromosomal rearrangements in different mammalian species and with the genomic ...

Transposable Elements, Inflammation, and Neurological Disease. [PDF]
Transposable Elements (TE) are mobile DNA elements that can replicate and insert themselves into different locations within the host genome. Their propensity to self-propagate has a myriad of consequences and yet their biological significance is not well-

Identification and dynamic quantification of regulatory elements using total RNA
The spatial and temporal regulation of transcription initiation is pivotal for controlling gene expression. Here, we introduce capped-small RNA-seq (csRNA-seq), which uses total RNA as starting material to detect transcription start sites (TSSs) of both ...

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Handshakes and Fights: The Regulatory Interplay of RNA-Binding Proteins
What drives the flow of signals controlling the outcome of post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression? This regulatory layer, presiding to processes ranging from splicing to mRNA stability and localization, is a key determinant of protein levels ...

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common types of bone sarcoma with a poor prognosis. However, genes involved in the mineral metabolism in the microenvironment of the bone affected by osteosarcoma are, to date, largely unknown.

Regulatory elements in the viral genome
The small DNA genomes of papillomaviruses contain a surprisingly large number of regulatory or cis-responsive elements, which regulate replication and transcription of the virus, and control details like specificity for certain epithelial cells, specificity for layers in squamous epithelia, feedback mechanisms and coupling between host cell physiology ...

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...
