Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Electroporation as a Solvent-Free Green Technique for Non-Destructive Extraction of Proteins and Lipids From Chlorella vulgaris

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2020
Proteins extracted from microalgae for food, personal care products and cosmetics must be of high purity, requiring solvent-free extraction techniques despite their generally considerably lower protein yield and higher energy consumption.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Grafting density-induced smectic A to hexagonal columnar transition in mesogen-free isotactic liquid crystalline polyethers with n-dodecylsulfonyl side groups

open access: yesGiant, 2020
Highly dipolar mesogen-free liquid crystalline polymers are excellent candidates for achieving large spontaneous polarization under relatively low electric fields for advanced electrical and optical applications.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Towers and Elementary Embeddings in Toral Relatively Hyperbolic Groups

open access: yes, 2020
In a remarkable series of papers, Zlil Sela classified the first-order theories of free groups and torsion-free hyperbolic groups using geometric structures he called towers.

Timing matters: Sonar call groups facilitate target localization in bats

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2014
To successfully negotiate a cluttered environment, an echolocating bat must control the timing of motor behaviors in response to dynamic sensory information.

Constructions of Σ-groups, relatively free Σ-groups [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Australian Mathematical Society. Series A. Pure Mathematics and Statistics, 1989
AbstractA Σ-group is an abelian group on which is given a family of infinite sums having properties suggested by, but weaker than, those which hold for absolutely convergent series of real or complex numbers. Two closely related questions are considered.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
