The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a major regulator of salt and fluid balance in mammals. Within the circulation, angiotensinogen derived from the liver is cleaved by active renin, which comes primarily from the juxtaglomerular (JG) cells of the renal afferent arteriole, to release the decapeptide angiotensin I (Ang I).
