Fetal and maternal NLRP3 signaling is required for preterm labor and birth

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2022
Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. One of every 4 preterm neonates is born to a mother with intra-amniotic inflammation driven by invading bacteria.

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Karyopherin α deficiency contributes to human preimplantation embryo arrest

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2023
Preimplantation embryo arrest (PREMBA) is a common cause of female infertility and recurrent failure of assisted reproductive technology. However, the genetic basis of PREMBA is largely unrevealed.

The Animal Sexes as Historical Explanatory Kinds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Though biologists identify individuals as ‘male’ or ‘female’ across a broad range of animal species, the particular traits exhibited by males and females can vary tremendously.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Increased hepatic glucose production with lower oxidative metabolism in the growth-restricted fetus

open access: yesJCI Insight
Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is accompanied by early activation of hepatic glucose production (HGP), a hallmark of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Here, we used fetal hepatic catheterization to directly measure HGP and substrate flux in a sheep FGR model.

TP63 gain-of-function mutations cause premature ovarian insufficiency by inducing oocyte apoptosis

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2023
The transcription factor p63 guards genome integrity in the female germline, and its mutations have been reported in patients with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).

Reproductive biology of blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) in the western Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The reproductive biology of blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) was assessed from 1001 fish (ranging from 121 to 275 cm in eye-to-fork length; EFL) caught by Taiwanese offshore longliners in the western Pacific Ocean from September 2000 to December ...

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.
