Cysteine-10 on 17 β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 has stabilizing interactions in the cofactor binding region and renders sensitivity to sulfhydryl modifying chemicals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
17 β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (17 β -HSD1) catalyzes the conversion of estrone to the potent estrogen estradiol. 17 β -HSD1 is highly expressed in breast and ovary tissues and represents a prognostic marker for the tumor progression and ...

Photosynthesis under far‐red light—evolutionary adaptations and bioengineering of light‐harvesting complexes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

Polymers Interfacing with Biology

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2011
The development of various controlled radical polymerization techniques as well as site- and residue specific strategies to modify peptides/proteins with synthetic polymers have made polymer chemistry a powerful tool to address materials ...

Growth, yield and fiber quality characteristics of Bt and non-Bt cotton cultivars in response to boron nutrition

open access: yesJournal of Cotton Research, 2023
Background Boron (B) deficiency is an important factor for poor seed cotton yield and fiber quality. However, it is often missing in the plant nutrition program, particularly in developing countries.

Insights into DNA platination within unusual structural settings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
2D [1H, 15N] HSQC NMR spectroscopy has been used to monitor reaction and product formation between [Pt(15NH3)2I2] and nucleic acids possessing irregular topologies and containing site specific phosphorothioate substitution in the phosphodiester backbone.

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is stimulated by red light irradiation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Light at different wavelengths has distinct effects on keratinocyte viability and metabolism. UVA light abrogates metabolic fluxes. Blue and green light have no effect on metabolic fluxes, while red light enhanced oxidative phosphorylation by promoting fatty acid oxidation. Keratinocytes are the primary constituents of sunlight‐exposed epidermis.

Efficient adsorptive removal of levofloxacin using sulfonated graphene oxide: Adsorption behavior, kinetics, and thermodynamics

open access: yesHeliyon
Water pollution by antibiotic residues poses a potential threat to environmental and human health. Graphene-based materials are highly stable, recyclable and effective adsorbents for efficiently removing antibiotics from polluted water.

Conformational modulation of sequence recognition in synthetic macromolecules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The different triplet sequences in high molecular weight aromatic copolyimides comprising pyromellitimide units ("I") flanked by either ether-ketone ("K") or ether-sulfone residues ("S") show different binding strengths for pyrene-based tweezer-molecules.

Vacuolar transport and function of Saccharomyces cerevisiae sterol ester hydrolase Tgl1

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Tgl1, one of yeast sterol ester hydrolases, had been found on the lipid droplets where sterol esters are mainly stored. This study revealed that Tgl1 is transported into the vacuole depending on the ESCRT‐I–III complex, and that it exhibits intra‐vacuolar sterol ester hydrolase activity.
