Allele mining in solanum: conserved homologues of Rpi-blb 1 are identified in Solanum stoloniferum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Allele mining facilitates the discovery of novel resistance (R) genes that can be used in breeding programs and sheds light on the evolution of R genes.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The Role of GLI-1 in Endocrine Resistant Breast Cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Estrogen receptor positive (ER+) and estrogen receptor negative (ER-) are two major types of breast cancer. For women with ER+ positive breast cancer, patients are treated with the antiestrogenic compounds, tamoxifen or faslodex for five years ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in the livestock, humans and environmental samples around the globe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesScientific Reports
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have diminished treatment options causing serious morbidities and mortalities. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the prevalence and associated factors of Enterobacteriaceae infections in ...

Antimicrobial Resistance in Escherichia coli and Resistance Genes in Coliphages from a Small Animal Clinic and in a Patient Dog with Chronic Urinary Tract Infection

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2020
Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise in certain pathogens that infect pets and their owners. This has raised concerns about the use of antibiotics and the transfer of resistance elements in small animal clinics.

Genetic and phenotypic insights in the adaptation of Magnaporthe oryzae to rice. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Magnaporthe oryzae is the fungal pathogen causing rice blast. Rice resistance is commonly used to control this widely distributed and damaging disease of a major food crop.

Reservoirs of Antibiotic Resistance Genes

open access: yesAnimal Biotechnology, 2006
A potential concern about the use of antibiotics in animal husbundary is that, as antibiotic resistant bacteria move from the farm into the human diet, they may pass antibiotic resistance genes to bacteria that normally reside in a the human intestinal tract and from there to bacteria that cause human disease (reservoir hypothesis).

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.
