Improved method for isolation of coupled mitochondria of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2004
A method for the isolation of coupled mitochondria from the callus of Araucaria angustifolia is described for the first time. Mitochondria were isolated from embryogenic callus of A. angustifolia. They were metabolically active, able to sustain oxidative

Inhibition of Respiration of Candida albicans by Small Molecules Increases Phagocytosis Efficacy by Macrophages

open access: yesmSphere, 2020
Candida albicans adapts to various conditions in different body niches by regulating gene expression, protein synthesis, and metabolic pathways. These adaptive reactions not only allow survival but also influence the interaction with host cells, which is

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

The point prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus in hospital and community-based studies in children from Northern Australia: studies in a ‘high-risk’ population

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Candidate respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine trials in pregnant women and infants are underway and a greater understanding of RSV epidemiology is now needed, especially in paediatric populations with high rates of acute and chronic ...

α-Mangostin Competing the Menaquinone-Binding Sites of NDH-2 to Block the Electron Transfer at the Quinone Pool of Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yesAntibiotics
Background/Objectives: α-Mangostin, a natural product from Garcinia mangostana L, presents very strong antibacterial activity in plant flavonoids against Staphylococcus aureus.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Mitochondrial HER2 stimulates respiratory chain function and drives tumorigenicity of breast cancer cells

open access: yes, 2019
Amplification of HER2/ERBB2, a breast cancer oncogene, leads to resistance to therapy and poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. HER2, a member of the EGFR protein family, normally localizes to the plasma membrane.

Mitochondrial DNA mutations and respiratory chain dysfunction in idiopathic and connective tissue disease-related lung fibrosis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are implicated in the aetiology of interstitial lung disease (ILD). We investigated the role of large-scale somatically acquired mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and consecutive respiratory chain dysfunction as a ...

Time‐restricted feeding prior to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection reduces tissue CD4+ T cells with limited impact on bacterial clearance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐restricted feeding (TRF) in mice increased liver fatty acid oxidation and decreased fatty acid biosynthesis. These alterations persisted when TRF was discontinued and the host was infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pre‐exposure to TRF did not alter tissue (lung and spleen) mycobacterial burden but significantly reduced CD3+ T cells in lungs

The Respiratory Chain of Alkaliphilic Bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Alkaliphilic bacteria that grow at extremely high pH are confronted by particular bioenergetic problems in carrying out oxidative phosphorylation. This project focused on the properties and adaptations of the respiratory chain. The respiratory chain as a
