Pendelluft in hypoxemic patients resuming spontaneous breathing: proportional modes versus pressure support ventilation

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care, 2023
Background Internal redistribution of gas, referred to as pendelluft, is a new potential mechanism of effort-dependent lung injury. Neurally-adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) and proportional assist ventilation (PAV +) follow the patient’s respiratory ...

Mechanistic Basis for Nonlinear Dose-Response Relationships for Low-Dose Radiation-Induced Stochastic Effects

open access: yesDose-Response, 2003
The linear nonthreshold (LNT) model plays a central role in low-dose radiation risk assessment for humans. With the LNT model, any radiation exposure is assumed to increase one's risk of cancer.

A Multicenter Retrospective Study Predicting Early Noninvasive Ventilation Failure in Patients With Acute Hypoxic Respiratory Failure

open access: yesThe Clinical Respiratory Journal
Background Volume OXygenation (VOX) index has good efficacy in predicting the failure of high‐flow nasal cannula therapy. However, its predictive value for treatment failure in patients receiving noninvasive ventilation (NIV) remains uncertain.

Modulation of spontaneous locomotor and respiratory drives to hindlimb motoneurons temporally related to sympathetic drives as revealed by Mayer waves

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2015
In this study we investigated how the networks mediating respiratory and locomotor drives to lumbar motoneurons interact and how this interaction is modulated in relation to periodic variations in blood pressure (Mayer waves).

Application of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation to respiratory complications of severe tetanus: a case report

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2022
Respiratory failure because of muscle spasms is a major sequela of tetanus. Spasms can be controlled with sedation and adjunctive treatment, albeit at the expense of respiratory drive and weakness.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Neurophysiological basis of respiratory discomfort improvement by mandibular advancement in awake OSA patients

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
Patients with obstructive sleep apneas (OSA) do not complain from dyspnea during resting breathing. Placement of a mandibular advancement device (MAD) can lead to a sense of improved respiratory comfort (“pseudo‐relief”) ascribed to a habituation ...

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Oxygen administration for patients with ARDS

open access: yesJournal of Intensive Care, 2021
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a fatal condition with insufficiently clarified etiology. Supportive care for severe hypoxemia remains the mainstay of essential interventions for ARDS.
