Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is highly pathogenic to European rabbits. Until recently, only one serotype of RHDV was known, GI.1/RHDV. RHDV2/GI.2 is a novel virus that has rapidly spread and become the dominant pathogenic calicivirus in wild rabbits worldwide.

Emerging RHDV2 suppresses the impact of endemic and novel strains of RHDV on wild rabbit populations
Journal of Applied Ecology, 2020Abstract Multi‐strain, host‐disease dynamics describe a system where multiple strains of a pathogen compete for susceptible individuals of a single host. The theoretical properties of these systems have been well studied, but there are few empirical studies in wildlife hosts.

Adipose-derived stem cells can alleviate RHDV2 induced acute liver injury in rabbits
Research in Veterinary ScienceRabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) can cause fatal fulminant hepatitis, which is very similar to human acute liver failure. The aim of this study was to investigate whether adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) could alleviate RHDV2-induced liver injury in rabbits.

Vaccine, 2019
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a lethal disease in rabbits caused by RHD virus (RHDV). Protection is only possible through vaccination. A new virus variant (RHDV2) which emerged in 2010 in France differed from the classical RHDV1 variant in certain aspects and vaccines against RHDV1 induced limited cross protection only.

Diseases can cause rapid declines in wildlife populations, especially in populations with no previous expose to the disease. An acute, mostly fatal emerging lagomorph disease, rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD), has recently been detected in North American hares and rabbits.
