Engineering Rhodosporidium toruloides for increased lipid production

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2015
ABSTRACTOleaginous yeast are promising organisms for the production of lipid‐based chemicals and fuels from simple sugars. In this work, we explored Rhodosporidium toruloides for the production of lipid‐based products. This oleaginous yeast natively produces lipids at high titers and can grow on glucose and xylose.

Exogenous glucosylglycerol and proline extend the chronological lifespan of Rhodosporidium toruloides

International Microbiology, 2023
Glucosylglycerol (GG) is an osmolyte found in a few bacteria (e.g., cyanobacteria) and plants grown in harsh environments. GG protects microbes and plants from salinity and desiccation stress. In the industry, GG is synthesized from a combination of ADP-glucose and glycerol-3-phosphate in a condensation reaction catalyzed by glucosylglycerol phosphate ...

Kinetics of continuous cultivation of the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides

Journal of Biotechnology, 2013
Microbial lipids are potential alternative feedstock for biofuel and oleochemical industries. The oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides AS 2.1389 is an excellent lipid producer. To attain parameters for the understanding of the lipid production process, we performed continuous cultivation experiments under either carbon or nitrogen limitation. The

Phosphate-limitation mediated lipid production by Rhodosporidium toruloides

Bioresource Technology, 2010
Nitrogen-limited conditions have been routinely prepared for efficient lipid production by oleaginous microorganisms. However, it is difficult to attain high cellular lipid contents with natural nitrogen-rich substrates. In the present study, we showed that lipid accumulation by Rhodosporidium toruloides Y4 was directly linked to the carbon to ...

Biosynthesis of lipids by Rhodosporidium toruloides ATCC 10788

Journal of Biotechnology, 1988
Abstract The limiting amount of nitrogen required to trigger lipid accumulation in the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides ATCC 10788 was studied, batchwise, by subjecting washed mid-exponentially grown cells to nitrogen at levels of 10−2 M down to 10−4 M per g l−1 of lean cells (2–5% fat content) in a mineral medium where glucose was present ...

Effects of biomass hydrolysis by-products on oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides

Bioresource Technology, 2009
Lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis inevitably coproduces byproducts that may have various affects on downstream biotransformation. It is imperative to document the inhibitor tolerance ability of microbial strain in order to utilize biomass hydrolysate more effectively.

Research progress on carotenoid production by Rhodosporidium toruloides

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology
Carotenoids are natural lipophilic pigments, which have been proven to provide significant health benefits to humans, relying on their capacity to efficiently scavenge singlet oxygen and peroxyl radicals as antioxidants. Strains belonging to the genus Rhodosporidium represent a heterogeneous group known for a number of phenotypic traits including ...

Compositional profiles of Rhodosporidium toruloides cells under nutrient limitation

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2017
Lipid production by the red yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides was explored under nutrient limitation. To determine the compositional profiles of R. toruloides cells, samples were prepared using a continuous cultivation process under nutrient limitation and analyzed via several methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental ...

Glucosylglycerol and proline reverse the effects of glucose on Rhodosporidium toruloides lifespan

Archives of Microbiology
Rhodosporidium toruloides is a novel cell factory used to synthesis carotenoids, biosurfactants, and biofuel feedstocks. However, research on R. toruloides has generally centred on the manufacture of biochemicals, while analyses of its longevity have received scant attention. Understanding of R.
