sRNA-mediated activation of gene expression by inhibition of 5'-3’ exonucleolytic mRNA degradation

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Post-transcriptional control by small regulatory RNA (sRNA) is critical for rapid adaptive processes. sRNAs can directly modulate mRNA degradation in Proteobacteria without interfering with translation.

Senescent cells limit p53 activity via multiple mechanisms to remain viable

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
To develop therapeutics that selectively eliminate pathological senescent cells it is important to understand their survival mechanisms. Here, the authors show that senescent cells manage to survive by keeping p53 activity in check through multiple ...

The role of ribonucleases in regulating global mRNA levels in the model organism Thermus thermophilus HB8 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: RNA metabolism, including RNA synthesis and RNA degradation, is one of the most conserved biological systems and has been intensively studied; however, the degradation network of ribonucleases (RNases) and RNA substrates is not fully ...

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Overcoming function annotation errors in the Gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus suis by a proteomics-driven approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background: Annotation of protein-coding genes is a key step in sequencing projects. Protein functions are mainly assigned on the basis of the amino acid sequence alone by searching of homologous proteins.

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

tRNA splicing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Introns interrupt the continuity of many eukaryal genes, and therefore their removal by splicing is a crucial step in gene expression. Interestingly, even within Eukarya there are at least four splicing mechanisms.

Interrogating the immune landscape of microsatellite stable RAS‐mutated colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
COLOSSUS project RAS‐mutated MSS colon cancer study explored transcriptomics and immune cell density by immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunoscore (IS), ISIC/TuLIS scores, mutation counts, and detected different prevalences but similar microenvironment composition across immune markers with clinical relevance for future immunotherapy combination ...

Transgenic plants as genetic models for studying functions of plant genes

open access: yesВавиловский журнал генетики и селекции, 2016
Transgenic plants are widely used for the investigation of functions of particular genes as well as for reconstruction of complex gene networks controlling plant morphology, biochemistry, and physiology during different development stages and in response

Ribonuclease inhibitor 1 regulates erythropoiesis by controlling GATA1 translation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Ribosomal proteins (RP) regulate specific gene expression by selectively translating subsets of mRNAs. Indeed, in Diamond-Blackfan anemia and 5q- syndrome, mutations in RP genes lead to a specific defect in erythroid gene translation and cause anemia ...
