Collective effects in cellular structure formation mediated by compliant environments: a Monte Carlo study

open access: yes, 2006
Compliant environments can mediate interactions between mechanically active cells like fibroblasts. Starting with a phenomenological model for the behaviour of single cells, we use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to predict non-trivial structure ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Thallium trinitrate mediated ring contraction of cis-2-decalones

open access: yesJournal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, 2001
The reaction of some cis-2-decalones with TTN in CH2Cl2 at room temperature was investigated. The ring contraction reactions occurred in good yields, however the regio- and diastereoselectivity were low.

Negative tension of scroll wave filaments and turbulence in three-dimensional excitable media and application in cardiac dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Scroll waves are vortices that occur in three-dimensional excitable media. Scroll waves have been observed in a variety of systems including cardiac tissue, where they are associated with cardiac arrhythmias.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Allobetulin and Its Derivatives: Synthesis and Biological Activity

open access: yesMolecules, 2011
This review covers the chemistry of allobetulin analogs, including their formation by rearrangement from betulin derivatives, their further derivatisation, their fusion with heterocyclic rings, and any further rearrangements of allobetulin compounds ...

Diethyl Pyrrole-2,5-Dicarboxylate

open access: yesMolbank, 2020
The title compound was obtained in moderate yield by a new and unexpected base-induced ring contraction from a 1,4-thiazine precursor. Its x-ray structure showing hydrogen bonded dimers was compared with those of other crystallographically characterised ...

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

Bronchodilator effect of apigenin and luteolin, two components of Dracocephalum kotschyi on isolated rabbit trachea [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of HerbMed Pharmacology, 2019
Introduction: Dracocephalum kotschyi is a native Iranian plant with antispasmodic activities on smooth muscles such as ileum and uterus. However, so far antispasmodic effect of D. kotschyi on tracheal smooth muscle has not been reported.

A coupled mitral valve -- left ventricle model with fluid-structure interaction

open access: yes, 2017
Understanding the interaction between the valves and walls of the heart is important in assessing and subsequently treating heart dysfunction. With advancements in cardiac imaging, nonlinear mechanics and computational techniques, it is now possible to ...
