Probing complex RNA structures by mechanical force [PDF]
RNA secondary structures of increasing complexity are probed combining single molecule stretching experiments and stochastic unfolding/refolding simulations. We find that force-induced unfolding pathways cannot usually be interpretated by solely invoking successive openings of native helices.

Reverse genetics in the Arabidopsis chloroplast genome identifies rps16 as a transcribed pseudogene
SUMMARY The plastid (chloroplast) genomes of seed plants contain a conserved set of ribosomal protein genes. The rps16 gene represents an exception: It has been lost from the plastid genomes of gymnosperms and several lineages of angiosperms, and may have undergone pseudogenization in a few other lineages, including members of the Brassicaceae family ...

Evidence for plant ribosomal 5S RNA involvement in elongation of polypeptide chain biosynthesis.
A series of short oligo-DNA probes (8-10-mers) complementary to various regions of the plant ribosomal 5S ribonucleic acid (5S rRNA) have been synthesized. The results of their hybridization to free 5S rRNA and to ribosomes pointed to the availability of

Tandemly repeated C-C-C-C-A-A hexanucleotide of Tetrahymena rDNA is present elsewhere in the genome and may be related to the alteration of the somatic genome. [PDF]
The ribosomal RNA genes of the Tetrahymena macronucleus exist as extrachromosomal, linear molecules. The termini of these molecules have been shown to contain the tandemly repeated hexanucleotide (C-C-C-C-A-A)n.

Slip of grip of a molecular motor on a crowded track: Modeling shift of reading frame of ribosome on RNA template [PDF]
We develop a stochastic model for the programmed frameshift of ribosomes synthesizing a protein while moving along a mRNA template. Normally the reading frame of a ribosome decodes successive triplets of nucleotides on the mRNA in a step-by-step manner.

Thraustochytrids exhibit four distinct polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) biosynthetic types: Type I (ELO/DES pathway), Type II (dual‐pathway) and Types III–IV (PUFA‐S pathway with varying gene losses). This genetic diversity in PUFA biosynthesis pathways provides new perspectives for understanding their evolutionary relationships and potential ...

FISH-aimed karyotype analysis in Aconitum subgen : aconitum reveals excessive rDNA sites in tetraploid taxa [PDF]
The location of 5S and 35S rDNA sequences in chromosomes of four Aconitum subsp. Aconitum species was analyzed after fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Both in diploids (2n = 2x = 16; Aconitum variegatum, A. degenii) and tetraploids (2n = 4× = 32;
