Gapmer Antisense Oligonucleotides Targeting 5S Ribosomal RNA Can Reduce Mature 5S Ribosomal RNA by Two Mechanisms.

Nucleic Acid Therapeutics, 2020
In this study, we demonstrate that 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), a highly structured and protein-bound RNA, is quite difficult to reduce with antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs).

5S Ribosomal RNA

Biomacromolecules, 2000
Ribosomes have been visualized in electron micrographs in 1943 but 5S rRNA was discovered 20 years later. The next four decades witnessed big advances in our understanding of the ribosome using biochemical, genetic and low resolution structural approaches.

Heterogeneity in the 3'-terminal sequence of ribosomal 5S RNA synthesized by isolated HeLa cell nuclei in vitro.

Biochemistry, 1978
Isolated HeLa cell nuclei synthesize ribosomal 5S RNA of very nearly correct sequence and size. The in vitro product was resolved according to size on formamide-containing polyacrylamide gels and the fractions were subsequently hybridized to recombinant ...

Identification and assignment of base pairs in the "tuned helix" of intact and ribonuclease T1 cleavage fragments of wheat germ ribosomal 5S RNA via 500-MHz proton homonuclear Overhauser enhancements.

Biochemistry, 1986
Wheat germ has been chosen as a representative eukaryote for study of ribosomal 5S RNA secondary structure. Proton homonuclear Overhauser enhancements (NOE's) at 500 MHz for the hydrogen-bonded base-pair protons in the 10-15 ppm region are used to ...

A proposed role for 5S ribosomal RNA

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1973
Abstract Cytoplasmic ribosomes show protein-synthesizing activity with degraded large and small rRNA's, but only if 5S RNA is intact.

Nucleocytoplasmic transport of 5S ribosomal RNA

Seminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 1997
Nucleocytoplasmic transport of 5S ribosomal RNA in Xenopus oocytes occurs in the context of small, non-ribosomal RNPs. The complex with the zinc finger protein TFIIIA (7S RNP) is exported from the nucleus and stored in the cytoplasm, whereas the complex with the ribosomal protein L5 (5S RNP) shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.

Base pairing in wheat germ ribosomal 5S RNA as measured by ultraviolet absorption, circular dichroism, and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry.

Biochemistry, 1984
Ultraviolet absorption (UV) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra of wheat germ 5S RNA, when compared to tRNAPhe, indicate a largely base-paired and base-stacked helical structure, containing up to 36 base pairs.
