Ribosomal RNA precursors in plants

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1970
Abstract A high molecular weight, rapidly-labelled ribosomal RNA precursor in the pearoot tip and in artichoke-tuber tissue is described. It has a molecular weight, determined by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, of about 2.3 × 10 6 daltons. The pea precursor RNA consists of two components which can just be distinguished by gel electrophoresis ...

Multiple conformations of ribosomal precursor RNA

Nature, 1975
WE wish to propose an explanation for the heterogeneity shown1 by ribosomal precursor RNAs on gel electrophoresis. The clearest demonstration of this phenomenon is shown in Fig. 1. 32P-labelled RNA was eluted from single gel slices taken across the peak, and rerun in the presence of 3H-labelled marker.

Splicing of messenger RNA precursors

BioEssays, 1985
AbstractThe splicing of pre‐mRNAs in vitro is accomplished by formation of RNA intermediates in a lariat form. Lariat RNAs have been recently identified in vivo supporting the validity of the proposed pathway for processing pre‐mRNAs in vitro. We have recently reported20 a partial purification scheme for a pre‐mRNA splicing activity. Purification of the

Speculation on the RNA Precursor Problem

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1997
While no convincing prebiotic synthesis of RNA building blocks has been demonstrated, at least two synthetic analogues of nucleic acids have been described whose properties are remarkably similar to those of RNA. The RNA backbone is thus not the only possible solution to the problem of replicating the information stored in a sequence of purines and ...

Dimeric transfer RNA precursors in S. pombe

Cell, 1980
Sequence analysis of a Schizosaccharomyces pombe DNA fragment revealed two tRNA coding regions separated by a seven nucleotide spacer. the 5'-proximal tRNA gene encodes a tRNAUCGSer sequence, which is interrupted by a 16 nucleotide intron at the 3' side of the base adjacent to the anticodon.

Enzymatic N-riboside scission in RNA and RNA precursors

Current Opinion in Chemical Biology, 1997
N-ribohydrolases and transferases act on nucleosides, nucleotides and oligonucleotides to effect base removal. Advances in mechanistic and structural analysis have established that enzymes of N-riboside scission act by combinations of leaving-group and ribosyl activation.

Precursor 16S RNA in Active 30S Ribosomes

Nature, 1974
BIOGENESIS of bacterial ribosomes proceeds through the formation of precursor particles1–4, consisting of an incomplete set of ribosomal protein5 and of RNA molecules that are longer and less methylated than mature RNA4,6,7. RNA maturation is commonly considered to be a part of the ribosome maturation process.

Possible Cytoplasmic Precursor of Haemoglobin Messenger RNA

Nature New Biology, 1971
THE “rapidly labelled” RNA of immature erythroblasts includes a rather homogeneous high specific activity RNA in the 9S region of linear sucrose gradients, but when the same RNA is assayed for ability to stimulate protein synthesis in a cell-free system, the peak of activity is found just trailing the 18S ribosomal RNA1,2.

Methylation process of mammalian ribosomal precursor RNA

Biochimie, 1976
The analysis of RNA from L5178 Y cells, by electrophoreis in 1.7% polyacrylamide gel, after short time labelling with [methyl-3H] methionine, shows that the three molecular species 47S, 46S and 45S RNA from the ribosomal RNA "45S fraction" are methylated.
