Robotics in Surgery [PDF]

open access: possibleScandinavian Journal of Surgery, 2009
Leonardo da Vinci, the master artist, is credited for one of the early concepts of robots in the late 1400’s. His genius propelled the idea of a mechanical device with the capability of automation, repetitive motion and wristed joints. While his idea of a mechanical knight was primitive, the concept led to a landslide of innovations.

Robotic surgery

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 2008
Over the past decade, there has been an exponential growth of robot‐assisted procedures and of publications concerning robotic‐assisted laparoscopic surgery. From a review of the available literature, it becomes apparent that this technology is safe and allows more complex procedures in many fields of surgery, be it at relatively high costs.

Robotics in Surgery

Journal of the American College of Surgeons, 2003
The drive to introduce operating robots into theaters is for a number of reasons related to their intrinsic properties: these include three-dimensional spatial accuracy, reliability, and precision, and in minimal-access surgery they aid the surgeon, who must contend with deficits in sensation and dexterity.

Robotics for Surgery

Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering, 1999
▪ Abstract  Robotic technology is enhancing surgery through improved precision, stability, and dexterity. In image-guided procedures, robots use magnetic resonance and computed tomography image data to guide instruments to the treatment site. This requires new algorithms and user interfaces for planning procedures; it also requires sensors for ...

Robotic Liver Surgery

Perioperative Nursing Clinics, 2010
Although minimally invasive hepatic resection surgery has shown decreased morbidity in select patients, conventional laparoscopic liver resection has inherent limitations with reduced freedom of movement within the abdominal cavity and 2-dimensional view of the operative field. Robotic liver surgery allows surgeons to perform advanced procedures with a

Robotic Gynecologic Surgery

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2008
The objective of this article is to review the recent adoption, experience, and applications of robot-assisted laparoscopy in gynecologic surgery. The use of robotics in gynecologic surgery is increasing in the United States. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgeries in gynecology include benign hysterectomy, myomectomy, tubal reanastomoses, radical ...

Pediatric Robotic Surgery

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2020
Pediatric robotic-assisted surgery is quickly gaining traction in pediatric surgical disciplines but presents unique challenges as compared to adult robotic surgery. Small abdominal and thoracic cavities limit working space and operative indications differ from the adult population.
