Modelling emotion, perfecting heart: disassembling technologies of affect with an android bodhisattva in Japan

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 29, Issue 1, Page 103-123, March 2023., 2023
Abstract As part of a surge in technologies with so‐called ‘artificial emotional intelligence’, robotics engineers and Buddhist monks in Japan have developed an android bodhisattva to deliver teachings at a popular Zen temple. Like many recent robots in Japan, the android is designed to impact visitors’ feelings.

Hybrid Wireless–Local Communication via Information Propagation for Modular Robotic Synchronization Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 4, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Communication is a fundamental problem in modular robots, with most opting to use separate systems for different functionality. A hybrid schema is proposed, integrating different communication systems together. By choosing modules as wireless hubs to relay data through a local system, it is demonstrated that a modular robot can save 20% in power while ...

A biologically constrained spiking neural network model of the primate basal ganglia with overlapping pathways exhibits action selection

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 53, Issue 7, Page 2254-2277, April 2021., 2021
We designed a spiking model of the basal ganglia of the monkey, derived from a mean‐field function‐agnostic model. Following monkey neuroanatomic data, it is characterized by strongly overlapping direct and indirect pathways. We show action selection is an emerging property of the resulting system and that it does not depend on direct/indirect pathway ...

Task Feasibility Maximization Using Model-Free Policy Search and Model-Based Whole-Body Control

open access: yesFrontiers in Robotics and AI, 2020
Producing feasible motions for highly redundant robots, such as humanoids, is a complicated and high-dimensional problem. Model-based whole-body control of such robots can generate complex dynamic behaviors through the simultaneous execution of multiple ...
