Fundamental Study into the Mechanics of Material Removal in Rock Cutting

open access: yes
The objective of this work was to understand the mechanics of material removal during rock cutting. The exact nature of the failure of the rock material at the tool tip was investigated using a single cutting tooth test rig coupled with high speed ...

Dynamic Etching‐Induced Cl‐Terminated Ti3C2Clx/Ti3ZnC2 Heterostructure for Ammonia Electrosynthesis and Zinc‐Nitrogen Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A stable Ti3C2Clx/Ti3ZnC2 heterostructure, fabricated by dynamic etching, exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic NRR activity (NH3 yield: 20.1 µg h−1 mg−1, FE: 38.1%) in alkaline media. The corresponding Zn‐N2 battery achieves a peak power density of 36.5 µW cm−2 and an NH3 yield of 13.1 µg h−1 mg−1, providing an advanced strategy for NH3 and ...

Experimental study of the end effect on the mechanical behaviors of rocks under true 3D compressions

open access: yesEnergy Science & Engineering
In true triaxial compression tests, all three principal stresses are imposed independently. This allows for a more comprehensive analysis of the material's mechanical properties.

Magnetoelectric Nanoparticle‐Based Wireless Brain–Computer Interface: Underlying Physics and Projected Technology Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) enable fully wireless, minutely invasive neuromodulation, and potentially neural recording, by converting magnetic into electric and, conversely, electric into magnetic fields, respectively, at high spatiotemporal resolution.

MGDP: Mastering a Generalized Depth Perception Model for Quadruped Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Perception‐based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) controllers demonstrate impressive performance on challenging terrains. However, existing controllers still face core limitations, struggling to achieve both terrain generality and platform transferability, and are constrained by high computational overhead and sensitivity to sensor noise.

Microseismic monitoring of the controls on coastal rock cliff erosion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The aim of this thesis has been to improve understanding of the controls on coastal rock cliff erosion, utilising microseismic ground motion. Coastal cliff erosion has remained poorly understood, in part confounded by the challenges associated with ...

Analysis of the peat slide at Pollatomish, County Mayo, Ireland

open access: yes, 2006
A major landslide event occurred at Pollatomish, County Mayo, Ireland in September 2003, during a period of intense rainfall. It comprised about 30 significant individual longitudinal planar type slides of peat and weathered rock.

Bioinspired Morphology‐Decoupled Soft Gripper with Enhanced Bidirectional Grasping Capability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by biological predation, a novel gripper decouples cross‐modal grasping via dual morphological configurations. Synergistically integrating hybrid rigid and soft coupled fingers with a metamaterial palm, the system performs active compliant grasping for static objects and passive cage capture for dynamic targets.

Fluvio‐hydrological characteristics and diverse bedrock geology control the dynamic growth, truncation, and amalgamation of bedrock streambed and marine potholes

open access: yesRiver
A total of 393 potholes (368 fluvial and 25 marine potholes) were studied at seven different sites in both the fluvial and marine environments. Diverse bedrock properties and large‐scale delivery of tools and grinders regulate the dynamic growth ...

Experimental study on rock damage frozen with liquid nitrogen under external water source

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao
The construction of underground engineering often encounters the problems of staggered sand and soft strata with abundant groundwater. The low temperature of liquid nitrogen can make the rock and soil quickly freeze to achieve the purpose of soil ...
