STEREOLOGY AND SOME STRUCTURAL CORRELATES OF RETINAL AND PHOTORECEPTOR CELL FUNCTION
The retina is the part of the eye which detects light, transduces it into nerve impulses and plays a significant role in visual perception. Sensitivity to light is multi-factorial and depends on the properties of photopigment molecules, their synthesis ...

The Cone Dysfunction Syndromes [PDF]
The cone dysfunction syndromes are a heterogeneous group of inherited, predominantly stationary retinal disorders characterised by reduced central vision, and varying degrees of colour vision abnormalities, nystagmus and photophobia.

Opsin activation of transduction in the rods of dark‐reared Rpe65 knockout mice
Rpe65 knockout mice (Rpe65−/−) are unable to synthesize the visual pigment chromophore 11‐cis retinal; however, if these animals are reared in complete darkness, the rod photoreceptors accumulate a small amount of 9‐cis retinal and its corresponding visual pigment isorhodopsin.

In conditions of limited chromophore supply rods entrap 11-cis-retinal leading to loss of cone function and cell death [PDF]
RPE65 is a retinoid isomerase required for the production of 11-cis-retinal, the chromophore of both cone and rod visual pigments. We recently established an R91W knock-in mouse strain as homologous animal model for patients afflicted by this mutation in

The zebrafish ultraviolet cone opsin reported previously is expressed in rods.
To examine expression of the zebrafish ultraviolet cone opsin pigment in goldfish and zebrafish retinas.Digoxigenin-labeled cRNA probes were prepared by run-off transcription from plasmids containing cDNAs for zebrafish ultraviolet opsin, goldfish ultraviolet cone opsin, and goldfish rod opsin.

Bleached pigment activates transduction in salamander cones. [PDF]
We have used suction electrode recording together with rapid steps into 0.5 mM IBMX solution to investigate changes in guanylyl cyclase velocity produced by pigment bleaching in isolated cones of the salamander Ambystoma tigrinum.
