An atom moving in a vacuum at constant velocity and parallel to a surface experiences a frictional force induced by the dissipative interaction with the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We show that the combination of nonequilibrium dynamics, anomalous Doppler effect and spin-momentum locking of light mediates an intriguing interplay ...

Abstract The motion of a roller or wheel on a surface is always attended with resistance. Coulomb made some experiments with wooden rollers on a wooden plane, from which he deduced two laws, viz. that the resistance is proportional to the weight of the roller, and inversely proportional to its diameter.

Determination of discrete element simulation parameters of rice milling machine
Objective: To solve the problem that the roller is inconvenient to operate and the concept of rolling friction coefficient and sliding friction coefficient is confused. Methods: EDEM software was used to simulate the white milling process.

Friction of physisorbed nanotubes: rolling or sliding? [PDF]
Rolling is the preferential motion of laterally pushed nanotubes (NT). Sliding can occur for multi-walled NT that form incommensurate interfaces. A peculiar supra-linear scaling of dynamic friction with NT size is observed in rolling multi-walled NT.

This report is a study of the rolling friction between a steel ball and two flat steel plates having various surface roughnesses. The results obtained are as follows.(1) With repeated traversals on the same track, the plastic peformation gradually comes to saturated, and the equilibrium state is reached, then the deformation becomes primarily elastic ...
