Extending and Exploring the 2 cm Survey Sample

open access: yes, 2004
We present new results from the VLBA 2 cm Survey, an imaging survey of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at sub-milliarcsecond resolution. We extend the structural variability monitoring program of more than 130 extragalactic parsec-scale radio jets from over

Evaluation of in vitro toxicity of common phytochemicals included in weight loss supplements using 1H NMR spectroscopy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the toxicity of 12 active compounds commonly found in herbal weight loss supplements (WLS) using human liver and colon cell models. Epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate was the only compound showing significant toxicity. Metabolic profiling revealed protein degradation, disrupted energy and lipid metabolism suggesting that the inclusion of EGCG ...

MgATPase Activity is Dispensable for the Pharmacological Regulation of the Functional Effects of the KATP Channels Opening in Brain Mitochondria

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Landmark
Background: The mechanisms underlying the effects of pharmacological mitochondrial ATP-sensitive K+ channel (mKATP) channel openers on the functional effects of the mKATP channels opening remain disputable.

Jolkinolide B induces reactive oxygen species accumulation and endoplasmic reticulum stress and inhibits MAPK and AKT signaling activation in renal cancer cells [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Men's Health
To investigate the impact of Jolkinolide B (JB) on renal cell carcinoma (RCC), we treated RCC cell lines with various concentrations of JB (0, 5, 25, 50 and 100 μM) for 24 hours and assessed cell viability using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8 ...

The role of lipid metabolism in neuronal senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Disrupted lipid metabolism, through alterations in lipid species or lipid droplet accumulation, can drive neuronal senescence. However, lipid dyshomeostasis can also occur alongside neuronal senescence, further amplifying tissue damage. Delineating how lipid‐induced senescence emerges in neurons and glial cells, and how it contributes to ageing and ...

BMI‐1 modulation and trafficking during M phase in diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The schematic illustrates BMI‐1 phosphorylation during M phase, which triggers its translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. In cycling cells, BMI‐1 functions within the PRC1 complex to mediate H2A K119 monoubiquitination. Following PTC596‐induced M phase arrest, phosphorylated BMI‐1 dissociates from PRC1 and is exported to the cytoplasm via its

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

IKKα inactivation promotes Kras-initiated lung adenocarcinoma development through disrupting major redox regulatory pathways. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are two distinct and predominant types of human lung cancer. IκB kinase α (IKKα) has been shown to suppress lung SCC development, but its role in ADC is unknown.

Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
