Present Status of Rotenone and Rotenoids

One of the most amazing developments in American agriculture during the past decade has been the rapid growth in the use of derris, cube, timbo, and barbasco as insecticides. These plants, all closely related botanically and belonging to the family Fabaceae, owe their toxicity to rotenone and a group of structurally related compounds called rotenoids.

Five rotenoids named dehydrodeguelin, dehydrorotenone, 12a-hydroxy rotenone, tephrosin and 12alphabeta-hydroxyrot-2'-enonic acid were isolated from aerial parts of Derris trifoliata. All these compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time.
