Gas Permeability of Round Window Membrane

ORL, 2010
The perilymphatic oxygen tension in the scala tympani was measured with a polarographic technique after various gases were insufflated into the middle ear cavity of 7 guinea pigs. Pure oxygen, insufflated into the middle ear cavity, easily permeated the round window membrane and elevated the perilymphatic oxygen tension.

Ultrastructural Studies of the Human Round Window Membrane

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1989
An ultrastructural study of 14 round window membranes of seven human ears disclosed three basic layers: an outer epithelium lining the middle ear, a middle core of connective tissue, and an inner epithelium bordering the inner ear. Morphological evidence suggests that these layers participate in absorption and secretion of substances to and from the ...

Experimentally Induced Round Window Membrane Lesions

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1977
This investigation confirmed previous studies indicating that the middle and inner ear of the guinea pig have a pronounced tendency to healing. Middle ear hemorrhage of surgical origin appears to stop quickly in the guinea pig. A surgically created perforation of the round window with or without removal of perilymphatic fluid by suction resulted in a ...

Rupture of the round window membrane

Indian Journal of Otolaryngology, 1981
Two cases of traumatic rupture of the round window membrane causing leak of perilymph into the middle ear and resulting in symptoms of tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo are described. While the vertigo responded well to the operative treatment, the hearing loss showed no improvement.

Dimensions of and Vibrations in the round Window Membrane in Cats

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1989
The shape and size of the round window membrane and its vibratory pattern were investigated in cats by use of an optical displacement meter and time-averaged holography. The round window membrane is convex toward the scala tympani and appears to be almost elliptic in shape. The major and minor axes of the membrane are 2,273 and 1,934 μm.

Mathematical modeling for local trans-round window membrane drug transport in the inner ear [PDF]

open access: yesDrug Delivery, 2016
The structure and composition of the round window membrane (RWM) make it a particularly effective pathway for drug delivery to the inner ear. Therefore, predicting the efficiency of RWM transport would provide useful information for enhancing local ...

Ultrastructural Studies of the Round-Window Membrane of the Cat

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1987
An ultrastructural study of eight round-window membranes of four normal cats disclosed three basic layers: an outer epithelium (middle ear), a middle core of connective tissue, and an inner epithelium (inner ear). Morphologic evidence suggests that these layers participate in absorption and secretion of substances to and from the inner ear, such that ...

Permeability of the Round Window Membrane in Otitis Media

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1980
A round window membrane permeability study of macromolecules in otitis media, using tritiated normal human serum albumin, was done in cats. Eustachian tube obstruction was used to induce otitis media in ten animals. Samples of perilymph in obstructed and normal control ears were studied after 25 minutes of exposure of the round window to tritiated ...

The round window membrane

1983
This membrane, also called the second tympanic membrane by Antonio Scarpa, separates the inner ear from the middle ear and is located in the bottom of the cochlea. The round window membrane is divided into three layers, epithelial, middle and inner layers, from the middle ear to the inner ear side.
