Quantifying Tropical Cyclone Vertical Mass Flux and Its Relationship to Precipitation Structures Under Varying Sea Surface Temperatures

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract Vertical mass flux (MF) describes the rate at which air and water vapor move upward or downward in an atmospheric column. MF is related to cloud and precipitation formation. This work examines the relationship between MF and characteristics of tropical cyclones (TCs) in idealized Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations.

Impact of Continental Configuration on the Climate Response to Greenhouse‐Gas Forcing in an Idealized GCM

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract The influence of continental configuration on the climate response to greenhouse‐gas forcing remains poorly understood. Here, we use an idealized model with varying land‐ocean coverage to investigate how the spatial distribution of land modulates the climate response to increased carbon‐dioxide concentrations.

Quasi‐Periodic Behavior of Tropical Cyclone Precursors and Its Phase Matching With the Insolation Diurnal Cycle

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract The formation of tropical cyclones (TCs) remains a significant scientific challenge. Here, we demonstrate that robust quasi‐periodic behavior (QPB) emerges during TC genesis with idealized numerical simulations. The QPB is an internal mode of the TC precursor, whose underlying mechanism is a convectively coupled inertia‐gravity oscillation ...

Convective Biases in the US DOE Global Storm‐Resolving Model: Insights From Regionally Refined Simulations During the CACTI Campaign

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract Accurately simulating convective processes in complex terrain remains a critical challenge for global storm‐resolving models (GSRMs). This study systematically evaluates moist convective biases in the Regionally Refined Mesh configuration of the U.S.
