Molecular Biotechnology, 1997Previous attempts to extract high-quality, total RNA from raspberry (Rubus idaeus) fruits using published protocols have proven to be unsuccessful. Even the use of protocols developed for the extraction of RNA from other fruit tissue has resulted in low yields (1) or the isolation of degraded RNA (2).

The raspberry plant belongs to the Rosaceae family. It was mentioned first by Pliny at the beginning of the Christian era as a wild plant coming from Mount Ida. This site gave its name to the botanical name of the raspberry — Rubus idaeus (Hedrick 1925). Raspberries grow wild in temperate parts of Europe and especially in eastern Europe.

Dwarfing in the raspberry, Rubus idaeus L.
Euphytica, 1969Six phenotypically distinct dwarfs of the raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) are described; two of them are digenic, ‘sturdy dwarf’ being D 1d1d2d2or d 1d1d2d2and ‘crumpled dwarf’ d 3d3d4d4. Jennings' (1967) dwdw dwarf appears to be phenotypically and genotypically identical with the digenic ‘sturdy’.

A demographic analysis of Rubus idaeus and Rubus pubescens
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1986The population dynamics of Rubus idaeus L., a colonizer of disturbed sites, and R. pubescens Raf., an inhabitant of damp woodland areas, were compared in a series of permanent plots. Disturbed site conditions trigger the germination of R. idaeus and give rise to predominantly even-aged stands of this species.
