Importance of integrating mixoplankton into marine ecosystem policy and management—Examples from the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, Volume 20, Issue 5, Page 1366-1383, September 2024.
Abstract Marine plankton capable of photosynthesis and predation (“mixoplankton”) comprise up to 50% of protist plankton and include many harmful species. However, marine environmental management policies, including the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the USEPA, assume a strict dichotomy between autotrophic phytoplankton ...

Internal transcribed spacer as effective molecular marker for the detection of natural hybridization between the bivalves Pinna nobilis and Pinna rudis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2024.
The Pinna nobilis, a Mediterranean mollusc, has suffered population declines due to a mortality event linked to the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae, though some populations show resilience. This study developed a molecular multiplex‐PCR method using species‐specific primers to accurately identify P. nobilis, P. rudis, and their hybrids.

The Growth and Survival of Carpet Clam, Ruditapes decussatus in Çardak Estuary (Çanakkale Strait, Northwest Turkey)

open access: yesÇanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Journal of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, 2020
The growth and survival potential of the carpet clam, Ruditapes decussatus, in Çardak estuary (Northwest Turkey) were investigated. Clams were grown in 3 different locations with different substrate characteristics.

Standardization of inter simple sequence repeat technique to estimate genetic variability of Ruditapes decussatus = Standardizzazione della tecnica inter simple sequence repeat per studiare la variabilità genetica di Ruditapes decussatus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758) is a bivalve autochthonous of the Mediterranean. We focused on the possible use of the ISSR technique to investigate its genetic variability. We tested four primers on 15 specimens from three northern Sardinian sites.

Assessing the effectiveness of marine nature‐based solutions with climate risk assessments

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 5, May 2024.
Despite the increasing demand for nature‐based solutions (NBS) to mitigate climate change impacts, we still lack a comparable way to estimate their effectiveness. Here we present a methodology for the estimation of the effectiveness of marine NBS based on the difference of risk estimated when they are applied and when they are not. The effectiveness is

Questioning the use of repeated nuclear DNA markers for assessing hybrids in marine bivalves: a case-study in Ruditapes spp. clams

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources
Reliable inferences of interspecific hybridization require the use of diagnostic Mendelian markers and, preferably, multilocus approaches in order to distinguish true hybrids and backcrosses from artifacts that may be generated by other types of markers,

Reproductive cycle of the European clam Ruditapes decussatus from Óbidos Lagoon, Leiria, Portugal

open access: yes, 2018
In Portugal, the European clam (Ruditapes decussatus) is an important commercial resource. Óbidos Lagoon is a strong candidate as a cultivation area to increase European clam exploitation.
