Combined Physical and Biological Cues Enhance Spawning Response in the Hard Clam Meretrix lyrata: Implications for Tropical Bivalve Hatchery Development

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Reliable hatchery seed production is essential for reducing dependance on wild seed and supporting expansion of marine bivalve aquaculture. This study evaluated three spawning‐induction methods for the hard clam Meretrix lyrata under controlled tropical hatchery conditions: heat shock (HS), HS combined with gonad addition (HS + GA), and air shock ...

Effect of cadmium in the clam Ruditapes decussatus assessed by proteomic analysis

open access: yesAquatic Toxicology, 2009
Cadmium, an environmental stressor due to its toxicity, persistence and accumulation in biota, is widespread in the aquatic environment. Cadmium accumulation kinetics have revealed that Ruditapes decussatus has a high affinity to this metal. Proteomics is an effective tool to evaluate the toxic effects of contaminants.

Molecular Immune Responses of Ruditapes decussatus to Vibrio Infection at Different Temperatures: Expression of Key Genes and Resilience-Associated Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

open access: yesFishes
The impact of pathogenic Vibrio on bivalves is expected to be aggravated by global warming, posing a growing threat to aquaculture. Clam production has been particularly vulnerable, with significant losses attributed to the lack of pathogen-resistant ...

Response of antioxidant systems to copper in the gills of the clam Ruditapes decussatus

open access: yesMarine Environmental Research, 2002
Copper (Cu) is an essential element for biological systems, however, when present in excess, is toxic. Metallothioneins can play an important role in Cu homeostasis and detoxification. Moreover, Cu can catalyse the production of toxic hydroxyl radicals that cause lipid peroxidation but defence systems in the cells can limit the oxidative damage.

Molluscs and echinoderms aquaculture: biological aspects, current status, technical progress and future perspectives for the most promising species in Italy

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2012
Shellfish aquaculture is a widespread activity in the Italian peninsula. However, only two bivalve species are mainly cultured along the coastline of that country: the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the Manila clam Venerupis ...

The impacts of As accumulation under different pH levels: Comparing Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum biochemical performance [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Research, 2016
Marine bivalves have been used to assess environmental As contamination and the effects of seawater acidification when both factors are acting alone, but limited information is available regarding the impacts of both factors acting in combination.

Linking Water to the Bottom: eDNA Study of Benthic Invertebrates and Invasive Species in the Venice Lagoon

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding of superficial water samples to assess benthic invertebrate biodiversity in the Venice Lagoon. Sampling from surface water revealed 80 taxonomic units, mostly benthic species, including several invasive ones, with significant spatial and seasonal variations in community composition.

Effect of stocking density on larval performance and post-larvae settlement of clam Ruditapes decussatus (Linnaeus, 1758) in bivalve hatchery production [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Larval rearing is a critical phase in bivalve hatchery production and plays a crucial role in the success of spat production. Therefore, understanding the effect of density on larval performance and post-larvae settlement is crucial for optimizing and ...
